What is a Data Inventory?
A data inventory is a record of the data assets maintained by the University. These inventory records contain basic information about the data type, systems or applications used to store the data, frequency of usage, and other relevant details. Other common items included are; data update frequency, software user licenses and provisioning, owner/maintainer, data source, relevant regulations governing the data, and more.
Why is NAU Doing a Data Inventory?
In the event of a breach of NAU’s systems, this information will assist in determining the extent and severity of the breach. Additionally, as data privacy is becoming more popular, the need for a data inventory is becoming more ubiquitous in regulations to have a data lifecycle.
