What is Unified Communications?

The Unified Communications Project involves the convergence and integration of communication methods and technologies including, presence (see at a glance if someone is available and contact them with a click) voice, instant messaging, conferencing, and applications.

Unified Communications (UC) is the convergence and integration of communication methods and technologies with each other and with other applications.  Unified Communications consists of the following:

Presence – With presence, you can see at-a-glance if someone is available and contact them with a click using instant messaging (IM) or a phone call.  Presence gives a user who wants to communicate with someone options for contacting them and tells them beforehand about the availability of the other user. A person can customize and control access to their Presence information.Voice – With Voice, you are able to conduct your normal telephone functionality, like placing and receiving calls.
Messaging – Use Microsoft Lync to communicate with two or more people over the Internet using typed text. This technology has permeated the workplace and is used by many business people over phone calls and e-mail.Application – Microsoft Office integrate with Microsoft Lync. Microsoft® Lync automatically sets your presence based on your activity or Microsoft® Outlook calendar. It is tightly integrated with Outlook. Not only can you manage your IM conversations through Lync, you can also send e-mail and Outlook meeting requests to contacts. Both Lync and Outlook also let you know when you’ve missed conversations. Your Outlook and Lync contact lists are unified. You can see your contacts’ status and communicate with them from your Office program.

Conferencing – Start a conference call in Lync by simply selecting multiple contacts from the Global Address List, your Outlook Contacts, or enter a phone number. One can also invite other users to join an ongoing phone call. Presence is the cornerstone of Unified Communications as it identifies the willingness and availability of individuals to communicate thus allowing one to select the most appropriate communication method. NAU will use Microsoft Lync as the Unified Communications client and when integrated with voice, this provides a powerful communications tool.

Why integrate voice with Microsoft Lync?

NAU IT Services offers faculty and staff a way to use their computer for voice communications. This type of communication has the following advantages:

  • Increased mobility – where ever your pc is your office phone is there as well
  • One touch dialing – access phone numbers of NAU faculty and staff that are stored in the Global Address List or of any contact saved in Outlook
  • Better call control – forward and redirect incoming calls
  • Easily create a conference call
  • Use advanced functionality like video conferencing and desktop sharing
  • Save Northern Arizona University operating costs
