Unified Communications (UC) is the convergence and integration of communication methods and technologies with each other and with other applications. Unified Communications consists of the following:
Conferencing – Start a conference call in Lync by simply selecting multiple contacts from the Global Address List, your Outlook Contacts, or enter a phone number. One can also invite other users to join an ongoing phone call. Presence is the cornerstone of Unified Communications as it identifies the willingness and availability of individuals to communicate thus allowing one to select the most appropriate communication method. NAU will use Microsoft Lync as the Unified Communications client and when integrated with voice, this provides a powerful communications tool.
Why integrate voice with Microsoft Lync?
NAU IT Services offers faculty and staff a way to use their computer for voice communications. This type of communication has the following advantages:
- Increased mobility – where ever your pc is your office phone is there as well
- One touch dialing – access phone numbers of NAU faculty and staff that are stored in the Global Address List or of any contact saved in Outlook
- Better call control – forward and redirect incoming calls
- Easily create a conference call
- Use advanced functionality like video conferencing and desktop sharing
- Save Northern Arizona University operating costs
