ResNet Wireless Interference

Wireless Support

The following chart shows supported and recommended wireless protocols on the ResNet network:

 2.4GHz5GHz
Wireless-A (802.11a)Not SupportedSupported
Wireless-B (802.11b)Not SupportedN/A
Wireless-G (802.11g)SupportedN/A
Wireless-N (802.11n)SupportedRecommended

Note: Although they claim to support 802.11g, some older Nintendo products require Wireless-B in order to connect to Wi-Fi. These devices are not supported.

What kind of wireless capabilities does my device have?
Generally, devices that are advertised as being ‘dual-band’ support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections and are therefore recommended for ResNet. These may also be branded as supporting Wi-Fi a/b/g/n.
Need help? Contact the Student Technology Center for assistance determining what kind of wireless card your computer has.

Upgrading Wireless Capabilities
If your computer does not support 5GHz Wireless-N, you may want to use a USB 5GHz card with your computer. These are available at most retailers and are generally advertised as ‘dual-band’.

Interference Sources

NAU’s wireless network transmits on the standard 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio frequencies. These radio waves are subject to interference. Below is a table of the most-common devices that cause wireless interference:

Device Type     Explanation
Cordless Phones Cordless phones can use the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequencies which can cause wireless signal interference
Bluetooth devicesBluetooth devices transmit over a short range 2.4 GHz signal. Many cell phones, tablets, cordless mice, microphones and other devices use Bluetooth.
Other wireless networksMultiple wireless networks setup within close range can cause mutual interference. This is why NAU does not allow personal wireless routers on campus.
Other wireless devicesMany other devices, such as wireless keyboards, mice, Xbox controllers, and wireless printers use the 2.4 GHz frequency
Microwave ovensImproperly shielded microwave ovens can emit 2.4 GHz frequency radio waves

If you find that you have a poor or inconsistent wireless signal in your room, see if you have any of these devices nearby. In some cases, simply moving your device to a different location will solve the problem.

Sometimes, however, it is necessary to remove the interfering device from the environment. This step can be difficult if the device is immovable or doesn’t belong to you. Under such circumstances, please report the weak wireless coverage to us so that we may investigate. If you submit a request ticket, please respond promptly with any requested information so that we can help you solve your problem.
