CARE Team Frequently Asked Questions
Building helping relationships for students experiencing challenges.
CARE Team case managers offer one-on-one support to students experiencing challenges. We are not counselors or therapists. We provide non-clinical space in which to reflect on the heart of an issue, problem solve, create an action plan, safety plan, connect with resources, receive emotional support, or engage with wellness activities or resources. Supportive meetings or check-ins are available by zoom, phone, or in-person at no cost.
What is a CARE Referral?
Submitting a CARE Referral at nau.edu/reportit is the most streamlined way to initiate outreach from the CARE Team. Faculty, staff, students, family, or community members are encouraged to submit a CARE Referral regarding difficult circumstances or concerning behavior that may be negatively impacting a student. Common concerns include: mental health, absenteeism, hospitalizations, grief/loss, basic needs, and more. The CARE Team will reach out to the student to assess what support or resources they may want or need.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of outreach does the CARE Team provide? Accordion Closed
Outreach is individualized based on the reported needs and may be conducted by email, phone, or in-person meetings. We collaborate with Campus Living and Counseling Services for further outreach as indicated. We work to assess needs, connect the student to support and resources on or off campus, navigate university processes, and more.
What is the typical outreach time? Accordion Closed
Our team operates during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm). We are not a crisis response team. We aim to reach out to students within 1 business day of receiving a CARE Referral.
Can I remain anonymous as the referring party? Accordion Closed
Unless you specifically ask us not to, we may disclose who made the referral. If anonymity is important to you, please indicate that when submitting the referral. Please consider that even if we protect the referring party’s anonymity, the student may intrinsically be able to guess in certain situations.
Does the student have to engage? Accordion Closed
We provide outreach but cannot require the student to engage. If the student does not engage, we provide follow up contact information should the student feel more open to support sometime in the future.
When should I NOT use a CARE Referral? Accordion Closed
The CARE Referral should not be used if crisis or immediate response is needed. Please utilize 911 or crisis resources. We encourage you to submit a CARE Referral after urgent needs are taken care of for support and follow up.
- Faculty are advised to not use a CARE Referral for concerns that are solely academic in nature – F2S comments are best.
- For general misconduct issues, please use the Student Code of Conduct Report.
- For any incident of sexual misconduct, please use the Sexual Misconduct Report.
If you’re unsure which form to utilize, call the Dean of Students for guidance, 928-523-5181 or explore other reporting tools available on the Report It page.
Could the student ever get in trouble for what I share? Accordion Closed
The CARE Team is here to provide support, however, we are not a confidential resource. There may be times where behavior reported is referred to the Student Rights & Responsibilities team. The Dean of Students does not punish students for needing support however Student Rights & Responsibilities may need to intervene to address any Student Code of Conduct matters and support campus and student safety.
Will you follow up with me as the referring party? Accordion Closed
You will likely not receive any follow-up or further information due to privacy laws and regulations.
May I also provide support or connection to resources? Accordion Closed
Yes! We understand that students confide in those who they trust and that your support may be important to them. Consider connecting students to crisis resources if appropriate.
