Mandated referral? Accordion Closed
NAU’s Substance Use Disorder Program consists of corrective sanctions for students who have a drug or alcohol related violation. Students are referred to the program by other departments on campus, such as Office of the Dean of Students, Campus Living, or Athletics.
The Substance Use Disorder Program has two tracks: Healthy Choices (Alcohol and Cannabis education) and COMPASS.
Healthy Choices consists of a 2.5-hour psychoeducational group followed by a 1-hour individual session with the Program Staff. In between group and the follow up sessions, students will be issued BASICS or CASICS (see FAQs for additional information). COMPASS consists of a 2.5-hour psychoeducational group and 3-5 individual sessions with Program Staff.
Students who do not complete the program in the given timeline are subject to fees or holds on their student account. Once a referral is received, the student has two calendar weeks to initiate the process. The student has 8 calendar weeks to complete the entire process.

FAQs Accordion Closed
Do I have to have a referral to be seen?
No! Individuals are welcome to schedule a free brief assessment with program staff without a referral.
What do I do if I have a friend who might have a problem with substance use?
Be supportive and listen! Consider showing them this website and letting them know they can get help, at NAU or other locations in the community, and encourage them to reach out. See the tab “resources” to learn more about what Flagstaff offers.
What is BASICS?
Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students—is a program designed to assist students in examining their drinking and other drug-use behavior in a judgment-free environment. This is not an abstinence-only program. Instead, the goals are selected by the student and are aimed at reducing risky behaviors and potential harmful consequences. Services provided through the BASICS program are non-judgmental, non-labeling, and private.
After students mandated for alcohol use compete their first appointment, the online assessment is issued, and the results to the assessment are the focus of the second session.
What is CASICS?
Cannabis Screening and Intervention for College Students—is a program designed to assist students in examining their cannabis other drug-use behavior in a judgment-free environment. This is not an abstinence-only program. Instead, the goals are selected by the student and are aimed at reducing risky behaviors and potential harmful consequences. Services provided through the CASICS program are non-judgmental, non-labeling, and private.

Why is there a range in fees?
Students who do not complete the program in the given timeline are subject to fees of up to $150 and/or holds on their student account. Once a referral is received, the student has two calendar weeks to initiate the process. The student has 8 calendar weeks to complete the entire process.
