Your guide to helping Lumberjacks Live Well
Live Well NAU aims to create a culture at NAU that recognizes health and wellness as a core tenet of the institution.
Supporting Wellness in the Learning Environment
View our PDF guide for tips to support wellness in the classroom
Optimal challenge and timing Accordion Closed
- Avoid scheduling exams or large assignments right after school
breaks (Mitchell and Ortega, 2019; Coleman, 2022). - Set deadlines earlier in the day to avoid deadlines that encourage students to stay up late (Active Minds, 2020; Mitchell and Ortega, 2019).
- Remind students about academic resources and support that are available to them (Academic Success Center, Lumberjack Writing Center).
- Provide interactive opportunities to check students’ understanding of key concepts during class (e.g., journal prompts, Mentimeter word cloud, Poll Everywhere, Slido)
Social Connection Accordion Closed
• Help students connect with each other and campus by sharing information about student organizations and campus activities. To do this, visit True Blue Connects and the NAU Activities and Events website.
• Offer opportunities in the classroom for students to work collectively on study questions and group discussions.
• Ask students to take down the name and contact information of at least one peer so they can stay connected if they miss a class or want to study.
• Encourage students to participate in study groups (make teamwork a priority in your class).
• Encourage students to connect with campus departments, mentorship programs, or peer education opportunities.
• Move tables and chairs into small groups to facilitate interactive discussions
Classroom Culture Accordion Closed
• Introduce yourself during your first class and share a bit about your hobbies, your career path, or what you like most about teaching.
• Take time to learn a little bit about your students’ needs throughout the semester (Coleman, 2022).
• Set clear course goals and make sure assignment expectations are clear from the start of the course.
• Take care of your own well-being so that you can be present and supportive of your students (Mitchell and Ortega, 2019).
Create an event that supports student wellness
If you’re faculty, staff or a registered student organization, you can support your fellow Lumberjacks by designing events that support wellbeing.
Creating an event Accordion Closed
- Decide you’re going to support student wellness: Plan a wellness-oriented event and use this guide for inspiration.
- Download the wellness wheel graphic: Choose the graphic that best fits the dimension of wellness that will be supported by your event.
- Use the icon: Place it in the corner of any marketing for your event. Certain activities may overlap between different dimensions. Do your best to highlight one dimension or consider using the full wellness wheel if your event reflects two or more aspects of wellness.
- Submit your events to the NAU Events calendar: Select the appropriate wellness category so your event will be featured on this page.
- Collaborate with campus partners: Reach out to Health Promotion to consult on best practices for specific health-related topics or cohost with another office.
