The Interdisciplinary Writing Program

The Interdisciplinary Writing Program (IWP) is a partner to faculty in the collaborative effort to support writing at Northern Arizona University. We provide writing resources and support to faculty and students from many different backgrounds – meeting individual learner needs – that support active learning, retention, and transfer in students’ academic and professional careers. To do this the IWP:

  • Works with faculty throughout the disciplines to identify areas of concern related to student writing and to develop possible solutions
  • Provides consultations to faculty regarding effective and inclusive writing curriculum and assessment
  • Encourages a scaffolded or progressive approach to writing throughout the curriculum in all disciplines
  • Develops resources for faculty and students to help improve student writing
  • Provides presentations and workshops for faculty related to improving student writing
  • Works with faculty to develop new Junior Level Writing Intensive course proposals or changes to existing courses
  • Designs internship opportunities and oversees student interns who provide writing instruction, support, and feedback in various disciplinary courses
  • Provides workshops and presentations in disciplinary courses introducing writing assignments and expectations, writing research, document design, and presentation skills
  • Emphasizes the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ High Impact Teaching Practices
  • Oversees the University Writing Commons (UWC)
