Registrar’s Office sustainability initiatives
Making the work place eco-friendly
As a university that promotes environmentally friendly habits, NAU has multiple initiatives to promote sustainable living. The Registrar’s Office is part of NAU’s Green Energy Initiative which focuses on workplace behaviors the reduce energy consumption.
Two key themes are reduce the juice and flip the switch. Some of the habits we want to promote within the Registrar’s Office are:
- Turning off lights in rooms that are not being used.
- Shutting off computers and other appliances when left for extended periods of time such as overnight.
- Restricting the use of personal appliances (e.g. space heaters, coffee pots, microwaves, etc.)
These efforts help reduce our building’s use of electricity and other resources. In Arizona, electricity is produced by coal powered plants which creates a great deal of air pollution. Minimizing the excess use of electricity and creating an awareness of ecofriendly behaviors will help to minimize energy consumption.
The Registrar’s Office has also made progress in reducing the paper in our office. Forms, such as Arizona residency, graduation applications, as well as several enrollment-related petition forms are now available online.
Another source for environmentally conscious behaviors is the NAU Residence Life “No Impact Jack” program. While initially developed for students, employees can also get ideas that go beyond energy consumption and include water conservation and transportation.
Faculty and staff can support sustainability efforts by becoming an Energy Mentor for the Green NAU Energy Initiative. The Registrar’s Office currently has one trained mentor. You can find more information here.
There are numerous ways that the Registrar’s Office can have a positive impact on the environment and the NAU community. It only takes the flip of a light switch to make a difference.
