  • What FERPA Stands For

Privacy is everybody's business

Why is FERPA so important?

What FERPA stands for

FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which is a federal law passed in 1974.  It is also called the Buckley Amendment.

According to FERPA:

  • Students have the right to inspect and review their education records. Some records about a student maintained by NAU, however, are not “education records” and may not be inspected by a student.  Examples are personal notes kept by a professor and certain psychological records
  • Students have the right to request an amendment to or challenge the accuracy of their educational records
  • Students have the right to prevent the unauthorized disclosure of their records
  • Students have the right to complain to the U.S. Department of Education about a violation of FERPA
  • Students have the right to waive the above rights in writing
