Bicycle safety tips
- Bike helmets are an essential element to bicycle safety
- Always wear an approved safety helmet before you ride
- Don’t ride double (unless you’re on a tandem, of course!)
- Never go in and out of traffic
- Don’t weave between parked cars or go between two cars
- Ride near the curb in the same direction of traffic
- Obey traffic signs and signals
- Make eye contact with drivers and RIDE DEFENSIVELY!! Assume that other drivers don’t see you
- Keep both hands on the handlebars (Don’t talk on your cell phone, eat or drink while operating a bicycle)
- Use lights and bright or reflective clothing at night
- Keep your bike in good repair
- Prevent bike theft: invest in a high quality U-style lock and make sure the bike’s frame is locked to the rack
- Register your bike with Parking Services (it’s free!)
- Ask Parking Services about higher security storage options (lockers and garage enclosures) on campus
