All You Need is Love: Cultivating Compassion for Self and Others
NAU Mental Health Symposium Series
Thursday, February 13, 4 – 5:30 pm
Gardner Auditorium, Franke College of Business
Were the Beatles right? Is love all we need? We live in a divisive, anxious, and violent world. It seems the virtues of love and compassion are hard to come by. Perhaps seen as weakness, or worse, luxuries. But what if compassion is fundamental to who we are as a species? What if compassion, the nurturance and fierceness of a mother, for example, are the revolution we need to heal our world? Come consider this important topic with us and how to cultivate compassion for yourselves and others.
Students, faculty and staff are welcome to join our community in exploring mental health from multiple angles.
This event will be streamed through this Zoom. For more information please visit Mental Health Symposium Series.

The Three Directions of Compassion Workshop Series – new!
Led by Mike Bouck, LCSW, EAW Counselor
Join us for a series of workshops focusing on the three directions of compassion: self-compassion, compassion from others, and compassion for others. Attend any or all workshops as your schedule allows.
Self-Compassion
Thursday, February 27, 10:30 am – 12 noon
HLC room 2407
Most people want to be more compassionate, thoughtful and kind to others. Research indicates that individuals with higher levels of self-compassion are more accepting and nonjudgmental than those who lack self-compassion. In this first workshop, we’ll find out more about self-compassion and how to give ourselves the same care we are often more than willing to give others.
To register, please e-mail ask-eaw@nau.edu.
Asking for and Receiving Compassion from Others
Thursday, March 5, 10:30 am – 12 noon
HLC room 2405
Many of us aspire to be more compassionate in our daily lives but we may not think about the obstacles that may keep us from receiving compassion. Research suggests that some people fear receiving compassion, and it may be harming their mental health. This workshop will address why we may resist help, what we can do to open ourselves up to compassion from others, and how to effectively ask for help when we need it.
To register, please e-mail ask-eaw@nau.edu.
Compassion for Others
Thursday, March 12, 10:30 am – 12 noon
HLC room 2405
Would you describe yourself as a compassionate person? Is compassion something we are born with or a set of skills that can be learned? Or is it both? Even if you don’t see yourself as a compassionate person, your capacity for compassion can expand, if you choose. Alternatively, you may be a caregiver to many people and perhaps you feel exhausted from caring too much. In this final workshop, we’ll find out more how to be aware of the suffering of others, feel it, and act on those feelings without burning ourselves out in the process.
To register, please e-mail ask-eaw@nau.edu.
