NAU Veteran Oral History

We all have stories to tell. Stories reveal the life we have lived. They convey how our experiences have shaped our lives. Through stories, our experiences find meaning and purpose. Moreover, from stories, others can benefit, learn, and gain a sense of connection to another person’s journey.

NAU recognizes veterans’ service to our nation as well as the contribution veterans make in the classroom and beyond. We want to capture and preserve our veterans stories. We are interested in the story of where you grew up, your decision to enter military service, your branch of service, occupational specialty, military experiences, and your decision to attend NAU.

Background & purpose Accordion Closed

In short, the NAU Veterans Oral History Project is the systematic collection of your story about your experiences before military service, during, after, as a student, and beyond.

The purpose of this project is to record and preserve recollections of events and experiences from NAU Veterans. A qualified interviewer will ask a series of questions in order to create an historical record.

In conjunction with Special Collections and Archives at NAU’s Cline Library, Veterans and Military Services extends an invitation to all NAU veterans and alumni to share your story so that it will be persevered for generations to come.

Deciding to participate Accordion Closed

If you are interested in participating in the oral history project, please complete the release form and send it to Vets.OralHistory@nau.edu. Your form will be reviewed and you will be contacted to set up a date and time for your interview.

Interviews are conducted on the NAU Campus in Flagstaff, with special arrangements for community campuses in Phoenix, Tucson, and Yuma. For veterans at the community campus sites there is the capability to use Skype for video interviews or audio recording only.

For NAU veteran alumni Accordion Closed

We recognize NAU alumni do not live solely in Arizona, but with today’s technology, we can use the resources available, which have been mention: Skype for video interviews or an audio connect via phone or computer.

Review and editing the video or audio transcript Accordion Closed

Before an interview is posted on the Cline Library Special Collections and Archives, you will have the opportunity to review, edit, and approve the transcript. If you as the interviewee make deletions of transcript, those sections of the video or audio tape will also be deleted.
