Sustainability Forum Action Teams

Making a difference at NAU

Our Action Teams share our mission, promote sustainable solutions, and work to reduce waste and environmental impact at NAU. Each Action Team has a distinct purpose with a common goal: to increase sustainability awareness and implement eco-friendly solutions. the Forum is a grassroots, volunteer group—our informal structure allows flexibility in producing effective and creative results. Our Steering Committee guides our work, approving recommendations that are brought before the Forum at monthly meetings. The Action Teams advance the institutional commitment to sustainability and help promote education, research, and projects that positively impact the environment.

These action teams:

  • create ways to market new and existing sustainable initiatives
  • evaluate, support, promote, and improve sustainable transportation alternatives at NAU
  • investigate opportunities and engage key stakeholders across campus in an effort to decrease NAU’s carbon impact
  • implement diverse initiatives to decrease chemical use in our campus landscapes and promote pollinator habitats
  • develop strategies for waste minimization

Energy Action Team Accordion Closed

Committed to decreasing our environmental impact, we think creatively about options for reducing our emissions. As our student population, gross square footage, and faculty and staff numbers increase, conservation and energy efficiency are key to reducing NAU’s impact. NAU has pledged to strive for carbon neutrality, and over the past few years, NAU has made significant investments to reach this goal. In our monthly meetings, we discuss future projects, creative financing strategies, and ways to develop partnerships for large-scale renewable energy development across Northern Arizona.

Landscape and Water Action Team Accordion Closed

We are a diverse group of student, staff and faculty members from NAU as well as from the larger Flagstaff community. We provide support and knowledge sharing, and strive to take on achievable projects across the areas of research, operations and education in order to conserve water resources, protect the natural environment, and promote sustainable landscape practices. To get involved with our team, please contact Janel Wilcox.

Transportation Action Team Accordion Closed

The focus for us is evaluating, supporting, promoting, and improving sustainable transportation alternatives at NAU. Explore the options available to students below, including biking, bus, and micro-mobility. To get involved with our team, please contact Erin Stam.

Waste Minimization Action Team Accordion Closed

This committee works to promote the university’s ongoing commitment to sustainability in areas of unnecessary waste. We do this by developing infrastructure and processes to efficiently and effectively minimize all facets of waste generated on or by the NAU campus. To learn more or to get involved with our team, please contact Laura Bohland and Sara LaRosa.
