Transportation Tips for Students

  • NAU encourages students—especially first-years—not to bring a car. Over 65% of students get around campus by walking, biking, or using the free campus shuttle.
  • Parking is limited and snow can make car use inconvenient in winter.
  • Alternative transit options include biking infrastructure and regional shuttles for travel beyond Flagstaff.

What Students Should Know

  • Parking permits are required for all vehicles on campus and are tied to your license plate via NAU’s License Plate Recognition system.
  • Garage permits cost more but offer covered parking and gate access.
  • Evening-only permits are cheaper and ideal for students with late classes.
  • Car ownership is expensive—even without parking, students in Arizona spend thousands annually on fuel, insurance, and maintenance.
  • NAU encourages walking, biking, and shuttles. Most students get around without a car, especially during snowy months.

Additional Notes:

  • Garage permits include access to gated parking structures and cost more than standard surface lot permits.
  • Evening-only permits allow parking in most lots after 4:30 p.m., ideal for students with late classes.
  • NAU uses a License Plate Recognition (LPR) system, so your license plate acts as your permit.
  • Students must park in their designated zone and cannot drive to class during the day
