Categorizing NAU’s Scope 3 Category 1 &2 Emmisions
Project Summary:
Addressing a critical gap in NAU’s carbon inventory, this project focuses on quantifying the “cradle-to-gate” emissions associated with the goods, services, and capital equipment the university purchases. These sources, known as Scope 3 Categories 1 and 2, often represent the largest share of an institution’s carbon footprint but are historically difficult to track. The project team is developing a robust Inventory Management Plan and utilizing environmentally extended input-output (EEIO) models to calculate emissions based on procurement data. The resulting insights will empower NAU to implement sustainable purchasing policies and engage vendors in collective emissions reduction efforts.
