Fall brings the beginning of the college application season. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid opened in October, schools begin accepting new applications, and November is National Scholarship Month. This month helps bring awareness to the importance of scholarships and just how many opportunities are out there to help students pay for college.
While the cost of attending college is on the rise, a little preparation now puts students at an advantage to get the most money possible. Each year, the federal government and private organizations award over $50 billion worth of scholarships. And get this, the National Scholarship Providers Association reports that over $100 million worth of scholarships go unclaimed every year. That is free money for college left on the table!
Scholarships are one of the best ways to help pay for college since they do not need to be paid back. The recognition of #NationalScholarshipMonth has helped students earn many more scholarships. Over the last 10 years, scholarships awarded to students have increased 45%.
Students can earn scholarships for a variety of topics including academics, athletics, essay writing, and so much more. Along with other financial aid, scholarships help reduce the need to take out student loans, which need to be paid back.
