Hailee Padgett, a 2022 graduate of Youngker High School, is continuing her education while building a life far from home. Now living in Georgia, Hailee is enrolled in a dental hygiene program, working toward her associate degree and preparing for a career in healthcare. Along the way, relocating to different states helped her build independence, adaptability, and a clear sense of direction for her future.
During high school, GEAR UP played an important role in helping Hailee explore her postsecondary options. Through campus tours and overnight visits at GCU, she was able to experience college life firsthand. She also explored healthcare pathways, including nursing, by visiting a cadaver lab. Just as importantly, GEAR UP supported her with FAFSA completion, resources she still relies on today. “GEAR UP helped me understand how college works and made it feel less intimidating,” she shared.
After graduation, Hailee took a chance and applied to a dental hygiene program, earning acceptance on her first try. She is now progressing through the program and preparing for her board exams. Looking ahead, she plans to work as a dental hygienist and eventually earn her bachelor’s degree to expand her career options, including teaching in the field.
As a first-generation student, Hailee says GEAR UP made a lasting impact for both her and her family by helping them navigate the transition from high school to college. She also credits her GEAR UP Coaches at Youngker, including Ms. El Habach and Ms. Taylor, for their encouragement and steady support.
Hailee encourages current students to take advantage of the resources available to them, stay involved, and enjoy their high school years. She hopes her story reassures students, especially those interested in medical or dental careers, that with the right support and planning, college and career goals are achievable.
