National GEAR UP Week is a time to celebrate the achievements of GEAR UP students and raise awareness of GEAR UP programs nationwide. In Arizona, Governor Katie Hobbs has proclaimed September 23-27 as Arizona GEAR UP Week.
National GEAR UP Week is a nationwide celebration that brings together students, parents, educators, and college access professionals to highlight the success of GEAR UP programs. It’s a time to raise awareness in communities about the positive impact GEAR UP is having on students’ academic journeys. By engaging local, state, and federal leaders, funders, and partners, programs can showcase their achievements and encourage greater involvement in supporting students and families. This week is dedicated to honoring the hard work and progress students are making toward their dream of attending college.
Ways to Participate:
- Take a photo with the I Heart GEAR UP Sign and post it to social media to show support for GEAR UP and spread awareness of the positive impact of GEAR UP schools and students on communities. Encourage leaders in your community to participate as well!
- Post a story with a GEAR UP sticker showing support for National GEAR UP Week.
History:
Arizona GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded grant program administered by the US Department of Education. Our mission is to increase the number of students from underrepresented communities who are prepared to enter postsecondary education.
Since 2000, Northern Arizona University has overseen four GEAR UP grants to support Arizona students, with the most recent awarded in 2019, spanning six years. This program assists students from middle school through their first year of postsecondary education.
Arizona GEAR UP partners with local and national organizations to provide critical resources, including FAFSA prep, college application assistance, tutoring, mentoring, and post-graduation planning.
Our work is guided by three primary goals:
- Improve academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education.
- Increase high school graduation rates and postsecondary enrollment.
- Enhance students’ and families’ understanding of postsecondary options, preparation, and financial aid.
During National GEAR UP Week, A60 High Schools and 5E’s of Equity High Schools will host various events to foster a college-going culture in their communities. Activities include FSA ID creation, FAFSA preparation, college visits, assemblies, scholarship application workshops, and more.
