Journey:
There was a time when Lilliana Minor wasn’t sure if college was the right path for her. Financial concerns and family responsibilities made the prospect of higher education feel overwhelming. But with a positive and driven mindset, alongside the encouragement of mentors and the support of her community, Lilli discovered ways to navigate challenges and create her own path as she enters her sophomore year at Arizona State University.
Programs like the Next Generation Service Corps gave her both guidance and the financial support she needed to pursue higher education. “Without them, I probably would have dropped out. I’m lucky enough to have been allowed into the program because they only allow a cohort of students.” Lilli earned a scholarship through the Next Generation Service Corps to attend ASU.
Lilli graduated high school in 2024 from Coronado High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. While at Coronado she met her GEAR UP coach, Krystal. Lilli credits Krystal with playing a critical role in helping her explore opportunities, navigate resources, and gain confidence in her decisions. “She really encouraged me to just give things a try and see what happens,” Lilli said.
Through these experiences, Lilli learned to embrace new challenges and step outside her comfort zone. She became committed not just to her own growth, but to helping others along the way, “GEAR UP really does foster a good environment for people. No matter what, students are going to get support and help that they need or help that they didn’t even think that they needed.”
Now a Tourism Development major in Hotel and Resorts Management, Lilli approaches college with determination, gratitude, and a willingness to explore every opportunity.
As Vice President of the GEAR UP Alumni Club, Lilli has risen to the occasion each time, showcasing her willingness to challenge herself. Her positive attitude and work ethic has led her to present at the NCCEP/GEAR UP National Conference in San Francisco, California, highlighting the Alumni Club and sharing her experience in the program.
Lilli’s journey shows that with the right support, self-belief, and openness to new experiences, uncertainty can turn into growth, and doubts can become the first steps toward success.
