Mindfulness for Beginners

Mindfulness has become a buzzword in our modern vernacular. And as such, who doesn’t want to be more ‘mindful’ in some aspect of their lives? Yet, what does this mean? And how do we practice in a hectic, busy world to slow down and pay attention? Come learn the foundations of secular mindfulness meditation and some practical ways to integrate these practices in your daily life.

Zumba is a cardio-dance fitness program that combines Latin, Pop, and World music. Zumba dance routines incorporate interval training (alternating fast and slow rhythms) and resistance training. No previous experience is necessary and modifications will be offered by the instructor to accommodate physical limitations.

Fall to Sleep

This workshop will focus on helping you improve the quality of your sleep! Participants will learn about sleep in general, factors affecting sleep, and how to optimize sleep. Participants will be sent a sleep diary to fill out the week before the workshop so they can optimize their sleep program.

Have you ever attempted to lose weight before and gained it back? Have you ever tried to improve your eating style unsuccessfully? We will rely on a body positive, intuitive eating model that is evidence based and provides you with all of the psychological tools you need in order to reach a healthy, stable body size.

Insight Meditation Class

Insight Meditation is part of an ancient tradition originating in India 2,600 years ago. The practice involves both concentration and contemplative methods of meditation. Learn to reduce stress and anxiety by focusing on the present moment. It is important to attend all 6 classes, as each class builds on previous instruction and practice. Please arrive 10 minutes early to get settled. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. This class is free and also open to NAU students and the Flagstaff community (18 years and older).

Foundation Training 101
Co-instructed by Deb Gauld-Lash, Certified Yoga Instructor and Amy Gordon, Board Certified in Acupuncture, Oriental Medicine and Chinese Herbology

Foundation Training is a movement practice that teaches proper body mechanics and movement patterns. To counteract common physical adaptations to modern lifestyles (e.g. sitting for prolonged periods and looking at screens), Foundation Training helps realign the body and integrate muscle chains to promote healthy movement. Foundation Training can benefit everyone ranging from people suffering from chronic back pain to elite athletes looking to stay injury free and improve performance.

Cost options: $35 / 5 classes, $60 / 10 classes, $75 / 15 classes – join any time!
Attend group exercise classes without a recreation membership, for as little as $5/class! Participants present their Jacks Card at the Rec Center front desk and classes are automatically deducted after each class. The pass is not transferrable or refundable and expires 1-year from date of purchase.

This class will begin with a sequence of restorative yoga poses followed by a facilitated yoga nidra session. Yoga nidra is an integrative style of yoga which promotes deep relaxation through a meditative practice that restores the body and quiets the mind. This class adheres to the Amrit method of yoga nidra. Suitable for all levels.

F.A.S.T. Fitness – Faculty and Staff Training
Spring Session 1: Monday, January 20 – Monday, March 2

Cost: $150 2x/week for 6 weeks, 12 sessions total
$175 3x/week for 6 weeks, 18 sessions total
Welcome to your new support group! FAST Fitness Small Group Training offers the best of both group fitness and personal training by providing interaction with peers, and the attention of a personal trainer to engage participants in a stronger sense of camaraderie while working to reach their goals. With groups of 3-5 individuals, you will receive immediate feedback to drive measurable results. Groups run for six weeks and are held twice per week. Register in advance, as space is limited!

If you have ever been interested in using the Recreation Center facilities, now is the perfect time to get involved! With the holidays and New Year resolutions just around the corner, this membership can be a great motivation to stay active. The best part is that you don’t need to do it alone! Each PD member can sponsor a “Plus 1 member.” This special membership allows faculty and staff to take the overall cost of an 8-month membership with Campus Recreation and divide it over 8 pay periods (payments begin on 2/14/20 and end on 5/22/2020). The membership begins the day you sign-up and will expire July 31, 2020.

These classes run through Thursday, May 7 and are suitable for all levels.
Participate in any combination of the following:
Mondays, 10:40 – 11:30 am, Basic Yoga: This class will focus on static, traditional yoga process with precise alignment and breathing creating a relaxed yoga experience.
Tuesdays, 12 noon – 12:50 pm, Core Strength: This class will help you build a more stable strong core to provide a foundation for an active life.
Wednesdays, 10:40 – 11:30 am, Flow Yoga: One pose leads right into the next with this dynamic style of yoga that is suitable for all participants.
Thursdays, 12 noon – 12:50 pm, Body Sculpt: This class provides strength and resistance training for the entire body.
