Lunch & Learn: Self-Regulation for the Helping Professions

Posted by hmn8 on January 16, 2020

(aka, “Helpers Helping Helpers Help”)

We at EAW have become increasingly aware over the past few years that NAU faculty, staff, and students who are providers and/or trainees in the helping professions face growing demand for services; our NAU helping professions community is reporting also a greater proportion of distressed patients and clients in their clinics and labs.  In an effort to enhance and promote well-being for our community, we are offering a 5-part Lunch and Learn session open to NAU professionals, post-docs, interns, trainees, and students, which addresses information and skills related to various topics and/or “stresses” involved in helping others:

  • “New Professional” identity, Shawnee McDowell, MSW, LCSW
    • Thursday, January 30th, 12-1 pm
      • Managing such issues as the “impostor syndrome”, accepting feedback from supervisors and/or patients, managing client pushback (e.g., about your age or lack of experience), and dispelling new professional “myths” (e.g., you have to have it all together to be good at this; good professionals are able to handle anything)
  • Core self-regulation and self-care skills, Heather Nash, PhD, LP
    • Thursday, February 13th, 12-1pm
      • Managing strong emotions and negative interactions during an appointment, as well as once the appointment has ended; managing feeling flooded during an appointment; compartmentalizing; taking appropriate care of yourself when you are not in the clinic or lab
  • Resilience for compassion fatigue, Heather Coate, MA, LPC
    • Thursday, February 27th, 12-1pm
      • Understanding secondary trauma and compassion fatigue and its relation to burnout; managing saturation issues; understanding and learning to use healthy consultation
  • Boundary-setting for self and others, Ann Collier, PhD, LP
    •  Thursday, March 12th, 12-1pm
      • The importance of knowing our limits, setting boundaries for ourselves; benefits and skills for setting boundaries for others; managing strong feelings (positive OR negative) for patients
  • Asking for help, Mike Bouck, MSW, LCSW
    • Thursday, March 26th, 12-1pm
      • Knowing when and how to ask for help from supervisors; engaging in healthy consultation with colleagues/peers; asking for help as a form of self-compassion

Our first annual Lunch and Learn presentations will be held in HLC 2403 over the lunch hour (12-1 pm), every other Thursday beginning January 30th and wrapping up March 26th.  No registration is necessary, all are welcome to attend.

We invite staff, faculty, trainees, and students from all helping professions [e.g., LPC, LCSW, LP, MFT, ABA, MD, DO, RN, NP, RT, PA, MA, OT, PT, SLP, DDS, DH, AT, MPH, etc] to attend one, all, or any combination of sessions.

We are honored to be able to serve and support the NAU community.  We hope you will join us!

Best wishes,

EAW Staff
