Paul Plonski, a psychological sciences graduate student in the 2016–2018 cohort, will be presenting his thesis titled “Comparing Satipaṭṭhāna-style Mindfulness and Progressive Relaxation Meditation on Neural Responses to Disgust and Unpleasant Emotion” this week.

His research explores whether brief training in Early Buddhist mindfulness practices, compared to a structurally equivalent progressive muscle relaxation training, will affect a neural marker of emotional arousal (known as the Late Positive Potential) to disgusting and non-disgusting unpleasant visual… Read more

Blake Piper, a Psychological Sciences major, and intern in the 2018 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program hosted at NAU, presented the results of his research at the Council on Undergraduates Research Experience for Undergraduates Symposium in Washington, D.C., on October 29, 2018.

Application for PSY 279 and PSY 485 Programs is Now Online

PSY 279, PSY 485 and PSY 486C partner undergraduate students with a faculty member to work on faculty-led or student-led research projects. Students can sign up for 1–3 credit hours of PSY 279 or 485 per semester. However, only a total of 6 credit hours of individualized instruction (e.g., PSY 279, 485, 486C) can count toward the psychology major.

Huffman and Wayment Awarded $1.4 Million DOD Research Grant

Dr. Ann Huffman and Dr. Heidi Wayment were recently awarded a $1.4 million Department of Defense grant for their research on Psychological Health and Resilience of Military Personnel.   Previous work on the “quiet ego,” a concept developed by Wayment and Bauer in 2008, has demonstrated numerous benefits of a quiet ego, including personal growth and a greater compassion for the self and others (Wayment et al., 2015).  Based on this work, Huffman and Wayment will develop a brief self-management app-based… Read more

Graduate Student Competes in Three-Minute Research Presentation Event
