Web Advisory Council
The Web Advisory Council (WAC) functions as an advisory body to the University IT & Data Governance Trustees and is created for the purpose of providing recommendations regarding strategic and technical direction for the NAU website and digital presence.
Mission
The Council shall limit its activities to advising on matters that directly concern the digital presence of the university. The key functions of the Council are:
- Recommend policies and procedures to ensure NAU web pages and electronic publications are consistent with NAU’s web standards and reflect the University’s brand and messaging to follow the University’s strategic direction
- Review and make recommendations on information architecture
- Review and make recommendations on design and feature change and/or addition requests
- Identify compliance issues and recommend resolutions
Membership is on a voluntary basis and representative of each college, department or administrative unit is invited to participate.

Relationship of Council to Marketing and Information Technology Services
It is the role and sole prerogative of the Council to offer a broad perspective of oversight to the University’s digital presence by governing change, policy, compliance, and recommending change to the Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Information Officer, and IT & Data Governance Trustees.
Technology Services will serve the Council in three ways:
- Each major business unit (Colleges/Departments, Administrative Departments, Divisions) have the opportunity to participate on the Council.
- The CIO shall appoint an advisor who attends meetings solely for the purpose of presenting information architecture, design and/or feature change requests and that request’s supporting evidence, and/or to present requests for technology or infrastructure changes.
- The CMO shall appoint an advisor who attends meetings solely for the purpose of presenting analytics reports, branding and messaging updates, and recommendations for changes to analytics/SEO best practices.
Responsibilities of the Council
- Recommend written policies and procedures that set high standards for site quality and content integrity.
- Review requests for custom design or exceptions and recommend branding and design standards.
- Review recommendations from the CIO for technology upgrades, implementations, etc.
- Recommend global changes to design and information architecture/navigation.
- Review website analytics and metrics in order to provide recommendations on improving the University’s web presence.
- Review compliance with legal and regulatory standards, including accessibility and security and recommend resolutions regarding non-compliance issues.
- Recommend additional page types or changes to existing page types within the enterprise WordPress theme.
- Recommend priorities associated with updates to web information systems.

Composition
Membership is on a voluntary basis and representative of each college, department or administrative unit is invited to participate.
Term
Members serve one or more years at the discretion of the department.
Organizational Structure
The committee will have a chair, vice chair, and recording secretary who are elected for one-year terms by the membership.

Meetings
The committee will meet at least eight times per year. Written notices of upcoming meetings will be posted to the website.
Minutes and Actions
Minutes and Actions of each meeting will be kept. These notes will be maintained electronically and accessible to the University on whole.
Recommendations and Reports
Website design and feature request recommendations and reports will be submitted to the Council. Requests will include both suggested action and justification for suggestions.
