Terminology
Here are some terms commonly used on our team that you will want to familiarize yourself with and be able to effectively explain to clients.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Cisco AnyConnect NAU VPN | This network is used as an extra measure of security that is necessary to connect to using your NAU credentials in order to login to the backend of the nau.edu. |
Codecademy | Codecademy is a third-party website that we utilize for training purposes. |
Content management system | A content management system (CMS) is a web environment that allows for the creation and management of content on a website. Editing the backend of a web page in the CMS will update the frontend (the live version) of that web page. The CMS that we use is WordPress. |
CSS | Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are a type of code language used to format HTML (ex: change font, colors, formatting). We often use CSS to format the width of tables within web pages on WordPress. |
Domain | Domain refers to a distinct subset of URLs that share a common string of words that are under the control of a particular organization. The University's primary domain is nau.edu. |
Google team drive | A Google team drive is a cloud-based online storage location where members of a team can store, access, and sort through their files. We have a Google team drive created specifically for our Publishing team, where we create and organize all of the files and documentation used by the team. |
HTML | Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is a standardized code language that tells a web browser how to display the information on the backend of a page. Our team uses basic HTML to address problems on various web pages. |
LinkedIn Learning | LinkedIn Learning is a third-party site that we use for training and professional development. You will be directed to complete courses in it during WordPress training or when you have finished all of your tasks for the day. |
Outlook (IRIS) | Outlook is the emailing system that NAU uses. It’s a convenient way for faculty and staff to communicate, manage their calendars, and schedule meetings. Although you have an Outlook/IRIS account, you will usually not use that account for this job. |
ServiceNow (SNOW) | ServiceNow (SNOW) is the primary help desk/ticketing system that we use to manage requests from clients. |
Siteimprove | Siteimprove (SI) is a tool that is configured to scan the entirety of in.nau.edu and nau.edu. It finds issues with the site, such as broken links and misspelled words, and then sends reports with its findings. SI is a tool that our team utilizes greatly to improve NAU’s web presence. |
Sites | The three main sites that we use are nau.edu (the Official University website that is designed for recruitment and to display information that must be legally visible to external audiences), in.nau.edu (includes content that is intended for internal University audiences), and training.wp.nau.edu (used for Sandbox and training purposes only). |
Skype for Business | Messaging on Skype for Business will be configured on your computer and attached to your student email. Occasionally clients or members of another department will reach out to you on it. It is important to note its existence, but this should not be the way that you initiate communication with anyone. |
Subdomain | A subdomain refers to a domain that is part of or branched from the primary domain. Some of the subdomains at NAU include in.nau.edu and training.wp.nau.edu. |
WordPress | You’re going to hear this one a lot! WordPress is the CMS that we currently use. It is what the nau.edu, in.nau.edu, and training.wp.nau.edu domains are hosted on. |
