Today we deployed an update to the Enterprise theme that focused on aligning the styling with the Marketing theme. The changes were primarily on the look and feel of the theme. We recommend that you clear your cache or use private browsing (incognito window) if you are seeing any issues. This will ensure that you are only seeing the new styling. In addition to the styling changes, we addressed some small issues and included a couple of new features. All the changes are outlined below. If you are seeing any issues or would like to share your feedback, please feel free to fill out our feedback form or contact us.
How and why the Enterprise theme is changing
NAU Marketing is currently in the middle of a two-phased process to revamp and revise the Enterprise theme. The first phase has been completed and is undergoing testing and reviews before being pushed to the main NAU.edu server.
This design exercise is guided by the messaging and aesthetics established by the Marketing theme currently in use on the homepage and other external-facing sites. The goal is to reinforce the idea of “One NAU” throughout the site
Overview of the full project
- This two-phased approach works within NAU’s current schedule for migration and deployment of WordPress to all colleges and departments.
- Sites that have already been migrated into the Enterprise theme will benefit from the enterprise theme improvements and will continue to benefit as new improvements are deployed to the theme.
Overview of the Phase One work
- The Phase 1 work includes presentational improvements to the Enterprise theme with no functional changes to the underlying theme.
- All of the changes made for this phase rely on design adjustments to the existing theme styles, especially in the use of fonts, colors, and negative space.
- These design changes are intended to provide a more consistent user experience across all of NAU.edu.
- The Enterprise theme retains its functionality, including the ability to add catalog info to program pages and faculty info to directory pages, etc.
How the Phase One edits affect site migrations
- Existing sites that use the Enterprise theme will get these design updates when they are pushed into Production.
- Sites that are currently undergoing migration should continue that migration work—there’s no need to change the way that you are currently migrating your sites into the Enterprise theme.
Phase 1 Design Enhancements
- The updated Enterprise theme features a more consistent header style.
- The column width at tablet and desktop views has been opened up, while guidelines for recommended line length have been maintained.
- The text size throughout is a little larger and the text is spaced a little farther apart.
- Button styles are now consistent with the Marketing theme.
- Post styles, such as News and Events, display wider with larger text.
Phase Two Overview
- While NAU Marketing is focused on rolling Phase One out now, work will soon begin on Phase Two updates to the Enterprise theme.
- Phase Two will focus on adding some presentation elements, to support elements such as larger images.
- Phase Two will also include support for more inviting homepage and landing page templates.
Miscellaneous Changes
- Removed the screen reader text from the banner image as it does not include any important information and is used only as a background for the page layout.
- Social media icons on home pages are now centered on mobile devices.
- Fixed an issue where some icons were not rendering.
- Added additional functionality on the post shortcode to allow the user to specify a word count to truncate posts that appear in columns to prevent them from being too long.
