Here we go new semester! New instructors, new classes, new classmates, new roommates, new schedules…new stress. Stress-be-gone with these 4 tips to manage it all before it even starts.
Tip 1: Outline your semester
Keep a planner of all your assignments and other important dates, such as doctors appointments, family events, work schedules, and other important events.
Keeping track of your assignments can seem a bit overwhelming, but making a to-do list or excel sheet with assignments and their due dates is very helpful.
To organize your assignments you can look at the syllabus for each class and there will be a layout of all assignments and their due date. Here is a short youtube video that can help you make your list of assignments. Just remember to update your planner as needed and be diligent in completing your assignments.
Tip 2: Sprinkle in self-care
Next, it is important to make time for the things that make you happy. Try setting aside time each week that is dedicated to yourself. During this time you can try out a new hobby, get food with your friends, read a book, go on a hike, or anything else that fulfills you.
Your physical and mental well-being comes first, so schedule it in. It’s an appointment with yourself and those appointments matter. If you are feeling overwhelmed, sad, or anxious this semester please reach out to your professors or campus health services. Here are campus health resources to support your mental health.
Tip 3: Make connections
Try out new activities and make new friends. Carve out social time and be intentional to choose activities that bring you joy (and are safe).
It is also important to make a connection with your professors. Try sitting in the front row or taking time after class to introduce yourself. Having connections with your professors can help you network for future post-college jobs and graduate programs. Plus, you’ll feel more comfortable asking them questions later in the semester.
Tip 4: Fuel up
If you’re hungry in the morning, then carve out time to eat before class. Bring snacks to campus to avoid hangry. Hangry will leave you feeling dazed and confused in your classes. Also check out Louie’s cupboard if you are struggling to access food.
