Electronic Fingerprinting FAQs
NAU is shifting to an electronic fingerprinting process. Learn more about the new process and FAQs below.
Electronic Fingerprint Process
All employees being hired for roles outside of Flagstaff, Arizona will be required to use the electronic fingerprint process described below. New employees will be notified of a fingerprinting requirement in their Welcome Email.
Once you have been notified that fingerprints are required:
Step 1: Request fingerprinting through Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Accordion Closed
If you already have an existing DPS Public Service Portal (DPS PSP) account, skip ahead to the Request Fingerprints tab/step 6.
All communication from DPS to your account will take place in your portal. You will receive an email notification to check for more information in the portal’s messaging platform.

Create DPS portal account Accordion Open
- Navigate to the DPS Public Service Portal using Chrome, Safari or Edge.
- Click on Login/Sign up in the top right corner.
- If you already have a DPS portal account, skip ahead to step 6. Steps 3-5 will instruct new users about how to create an account.
- Indicate that you are creating an account related to background check for employment/licensure.
- Answer all demographic information questions appropriately, paying careful attention to the prompts.
- Enter your legal first name, last name and suffix. This information must match exactly or there will be delays in your fingerprint processing.
- If you would ever like to receive account authentication requests via text, you must enter your cell number into the Mobile Number field. Your account will be initially verified through email only.
- Verify your account via the verification email.
- Email will be sent from do_not_reply_psp@azdps.gov.
- If you did not receive the email, check your spam, junk or trash folder before reaching out to DPS directly.
- After you have verified your account via email, you will receive another email indicating the account has been unlocked.

Request fingerprints Accordion Closed
- Log into your DPS account using Chrome, Safari or Edge.
- Click on “Services” in the top toolbar and then the tile for “Background Check for Employment/Licensure.”
- You will be asked to provide a code to complete your request.
- If you need fingerprints because you are or will be an employee at NAU, use code ssp-190.a.
- If you need fingerprints because you are or will be a volunteer at NAU, use code ssv-190.v.
- Do not use these codes interchangeably or your request will experience delays.
- Follow the questions, providing complete and accurate responses.
- After digitally signing the request, review the document and click “Continue to My Order.”
- Select “Request Employer/Agency Pay,” then follow the prompts.
- NAU covers the cost of this service for employees. Personal credit card payments will not be reimbursed. Please ensure correct selection in this question to avoid unnecessary out-of-pocket expenses.
After completing these steps, you will be added to NAU’s list for payment review. Please allow us 1-2 business days to confirm payment in the DPS portal. After we confirm your payment, you will receive an email from do_not_reply_psp@azdps.gov indicating you need to log back into your portal.

- Log into the DPS portal and click on “Messages” in the top toolbar.
- The message in the DPS portal will contain instructions about how to schedule an appointment near you with our electronic fingerprint vendor, Fieldprint.
- The email will also contain your unique reference number, which you will need to book your appointment with Fieldprint.
Step 2: Book electronic fingerprint appointment through Fieldprint Accordion Closed
The instructions with a link to book your fingerprint are included in a message to you in your DPS portal.
Book an appointment anywhere Accordion Open
- Log into your DPS account using Chrome, Safari or Edge and click on “Messages” in the top toolbar.
- Review the message and click on the link to request an appointment with Fieldprint.
- Create and verify your new account with Fieldprint.
- Sign in using your new account credentials. When asked to enter a code, enter code FPNWFP.
- When asked to enter a reference number, include the number you received in the email in your DPS portal.
- On the Employer page in the Data Collection section, answer NO to the “Is there employer information you would like to provide?” question. There will be a blank page after this question that you can click through.
- Select a location convenient to you and book an appointment.
- You will receive an email confirmation with your appointment details.

Book an appointment at NAU HR in Flagstaff Accordion Closed
- Log into your DPS account using Chrome, Safari or Edge and click on “Messages” in the top toolbar.
- Review the message and click on the link to request an appointment with Fieldprint.
- Create an account with Fieldprint. Enter the requested demographic information required by DPS and the FBI.
- Sign in using your new account credentials. When asked to enter a code, enter code FPIHFP.
- When asked to enter a reference number, include the number you received in the email in your DPS portal.
- Complete the rest of the registration. This will add you to a list of people eligible to be fingerprinted at NAU HR in Flagstaff.
- Once you receive the email confirmation from Fieldprint that you are registered, book an appointment time using the Flagstaff HR appointment scheduler.
Step 3: Attend confirmed appointment Accordion Closed
You will be asked to show 2 forms of identification at the fingerprint appointment.* Follow the instructions detailed in your appointment confirmation email.
After verifying your ID with these documents, your fingerprints will be collected electronically and the results will be securely submitted to NAU. You will receive an email confirming that your prints have been collected after your appointment.
*If you are being fingerprinted at NAU’s Flagstaff HR location, you may complete your I-9 verification at the same time as your fingerprinting appointment.

Eligibility Questions
How do I know if I need to be fingerprinted? Accordion Closed
If you are being fingerprinted as a part of your pre-employment screening activities, you will receive a welcome email from your designated Onboarding Specialist. That email will include information about whether fingerprinting is required.
If you are being fingerprinted for another reason (i.e. grant compliance), your supervisor or HR will notify you of this requirement.
Who is eligible to use electronic fingerprinting? Accordion Closed
Any current or future NAU employee* or volunteer who has been instructed to complete fingerprinting is eligible to use the electronic fingerprinting process detailed on this page.
*Exception: employees being hired into the NAU Police Department will need to complete their fingerprinting with PD.

I am a foreign national employee. Can I use this process? Accordion Closed
Yes, foreign nationals can use this process to complete their fingerprinting requirements.
- If you have a social security number (SSN), you should enter that when requested in the portals.
- If you don’t have a SSN, you should check the box stating that you do not have an SSN in the DPS portal. In the Fieldprint portal, please enter 000-00-0000 in the SSN question field.
If I have an Arizona fingerprint clearance card, do I still need to be fingerprinted? Accordion Closed
Yes. NAU reserves the right to make its own determination regarding employment suitability based on fingerprint results.

Flagstaff HR Appointment Questions
I need help booking my Fieldprint appointment at this site. Accordion Closed
To be eligible to book a fingerprint appointment at this site, you must have completed all elements of Step 1 (Request fingerprinting through DPS) and Step 2 (Book electronic fingerprint appointment through Fieldprint) detailed above.
Once you have registered through Fieldprint, you are eligible to be fingerprinted at this site for 90 days. Use the Flagstaff HR appointment scheduler to book an appointment; if no appointment times work for you, please contact the HR Front Desk during regular business hours.
I need to be fingerprinted for NAU and another agency. Can I complete both appointments here? Accordion Closed
No, the Flagstaff HR site only processes fingerprints for NAU’s employment purposes.
There are no appointment times at this location that work for me. Can I complete my appointment elsewhere? Accordion Closed
If none of the appointment times in our Flagstaff HR appointment scheduler work for you, please contact the HR Front Desk during regular business hours to book an appointment.
If you have completed Steps 1 and 2 above, you can walk in during our business hours but customers with an appointment will be served first. We encourage everyone to use our appointment scheduler for fastest service.
Can I complete my fingerprinting and I-9 during the same appointment? Accordion Closed
If you are completing your fingerprint at the Flagstaff HR site, you can complete both the I-9 and your fingerprint at the same appointment. Choose the I-9 and Fingerprinting service in our appointment scheduler.
General FAQs
Can I drop in for a fingerprint appointment? Accordion Closed
Fieldprint network site: All Fieldprint network sites require an appointment and walk-ins will not be served. Review the site-specific information provided on the Fieldprint website for more information.
Flagstaff HR site: If you have completed Steps 1 and 2 above, you can walk in during our business hours but customers with an appointment will be served first. We encourage everyone to use our appointment scheduler for fastest service.
How secure are my fingerprints/associated information throughout this process? Accordion Closed
Both the DPS portal and the Fieldprint account registration services cover information about how your fingerprint information is used and stored.
Confidential information related to the fingerprint results are only communicated to authorized NAU employees via DPS’s secure portal.
Why do I need to be fingerprinted? Accordion Closed
HR Onboarding Specialists make final determinations about whether fingerprints are needed when they receive onboarding requests in the Employee Service Center.
New or continuing employees moving into a Safety and Security Sensitive position are required to be fingerprinted by A.R.S. 15-1649, NAU Policy 1.085 and ABOR Policy 6-709.
I need to be fingerprinted for NAU and another agency. Can I do one appointment to complete both requests? Accordion Closed
Each fingerprint request made through DPS requires a unique request reason. As such, you will need to complete one appointment per fingerprint request.
I work for NAU Police. Will I be fingerprinted using this process? Accordion Closed
All employees being hired for work at the NAU Police Department are required to go through PD’s fingerprinting process and should not use the process described on this page.
