As the semester hits its stride, November offers the ideal moment to pause and take stock. With routines now set, it’s a great time to assess how you’ve been managing your time and responsibilities. Have you found a rhythm that works? Improved your study habits? Taken on new roles or projects? Even small achievements can make strong additions to your résumé or LinkedIn profile, showing growth and initiative. Use what you’ve accomplished so far to plan your next move.

If you attended the NAU Career and Graduate School Fair in late September, it’s not too late to follow up with the connections you made—and it’s never too late to explore upcoming events on Handshake. Whether you exchanged business cards, had meaningful conversations or just explored options, Career Development can help you take the next step. Schedule an appointment to strategize your outreach, get feedback on your résumé or LinkedIn profile, or find new opportunities that match your interests.

Career Development’s website also features Career Steps, a series of self-paced online modules that cover topics like networking and job search strategies. If time management is an area you’d like to improve, try the “Managing Your Career” and “Designing Career Experiments” modules. For deeper skill-building, NAU students have free access to Udemy, where courses such as “Time Management for Professionals” and “Productivity and Time Management for the Overwhelmed” can help you stay organized and focused. You can also find templates and tools from the Academic Success Centers, including weekly planners and project plans to keep your semester on track.

Your career journey doesn’t start after graduation—it starts now. Take advantage of the support, connections and resources available this semester. Whether you’re searching for a part-time job, exploring graduate school or figuring out your path, NAU Career Development is here to help. Let’s make this fall the season you take your next big step.

Build your career confidence with communication skills that stand out  Accordion Closed

Think communication is just about talking? It’s one of the top skills employers want—and one many students overlook. Mastering this competency now can boost your confidence, improve teamwork and help you stand out in any job.

Why communication matters for your career
When it comes to landing a job or internship, communication isn’t just a “nice-to-have”—it’s essential. The National Association of Colleges and Employers, or NACE, identifies communication as one of the core career readiness competencies that employers look for in student hires. Whether you’re explaining an idea to a professor, collaborating on a group project or emailing a potential employer, the ability to share your thoughts clearly and confidently makes a difference.

What is the NACE communication competency?
The communication competency focuses on effectively exchanging information with others. It includes written, verbal and digital communication skills, as well as the ability to tailor your message to different audiences. For example:

  • Writing a clear, professional email to a supervisor.
  • Presenting ideas in a class or meeting.
  • Collaborating with teammates in person or online.

Why it matters to employers
According to NACE research, strong communication skills consistently rank among the top qualities employers seek. Even the most talented employees need to share their ideas, work with others and build relationships to succeed. Employers notice students who can listen well, write clearly and speak with confidence.

How to strengthen your communication skills
Here are a few ways to practice and develop this competency on campus:

  • Get involved in student employment. Every job—whether in the library, dining services or a campus office—offers daily opportunities to practice professional communication.
  • Use resources like Career Development. Visit your career center for résumé reviews, mock interviews and workshops focused on professional communication.
  • Pay attention to digital professionalism. How you write emails, use messaging platforms and handle group texts matters. Keep your communication clear, respectful and appropriate.

The takeaway
Strong communication can set you apart in any job search or career path. Start practicing now, and you’ll find it’s a skill that not only helps you get hired but also helps you thrive once you’re on the job.
