Online College Access Professional (CAP) Training
Since 2013, AZ GEAR UP has partnered with Education Forward Arizona to provide counselors and college access practitioners high-quality online training – College Access Professional or “CAP” Training – culminating in certification as college access professionals.
CAP Training offers 12 individual courses. Participants may complete one or more courses. Each course provides:
- 20 Professional Development hours in a five-week online course.
- 4 sessions – each session takes four-to-six hours to complete.
AZ GEAR UP offers College and Career Advising in the Middle Grades I and II. Participation in these two courses, offered by AZ GEAR UP, are free to educators in Arizona. This two-course series includes a total of eight sessions that address the skills and knowledge required to counsel middle grade students for college and careers. Participants engage in building knowledge and skills in several areas including the creation of a college-going culture, the value and affordability of postsecondary education, career exploration, using data to support student success, academic planning, transitions into middle and high school, and developing academic mindsets and skills. Participants engage in constructive discussions in a learning community with their colleagues during each session, and complete practical, hands-on activities throughout the courses. Note: The term “college” is used throughout this course to refer to any education or training that occurs after high school. School counselors as well as middle school administrators and teachers are encouraged to participate. See the Middle Grades I and II course descriptions here
