New Year’s resolutions. Somehow they are always over before they even start. You don’t necessarily need to make a resolution, but if you want to, try making one that is not based on numbers or dieting. Often, diet-based New Year’s resolutions are not long term changes. For example, a 30 day juice cleanse will not help you make a long term change or have a lasting effect on your health.
Here are 5 non-diet, non numerical New Years resolutions to try that are actually attainable:
Tips 1: Drink Yo H2O
It is easy to get dehydrated at high elevations like we have in Flagstaff. Water is also very important for your body to function. This year, try carrying around a water bottle with you to remind yourself to drink more water throughout the day.
Tip 2: Celebrate Your Groovy Self
In other words, stop comparing yourself to others. Diet culture, advertisements about appearance, and pressure from society can pressure people into wanting to look a certain way. This year, practice being kind to yourself and loving your body as it is. It is easier said than done, but it comes with practice. Self love is a journey!
Tip 3: Wiggle Those Toes To Your Favorite Tune
Or just move your body in a way that is fun for you. Exercising and working out are common New Year’s resolutions, but people often set unrealistic goals and aren’t enjoying the time they spend moving their bodies. This year, focus on fun ways to move your body such as yoga, hiking, dancing, or group classes. If you don’t like doing a certain activity, try something else until you find what makes you happy!
Tip 4: Catch Some Zzzzzs
Establish a sleep schedule: Sleep is very important, especially for college students. If you find yourself staying up very late and feeling groggy in the morning, make it a goal this year to get enough sleep by setting a sleep schedule. You can start by going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day.
Tip 5: Less Blue Light and More Sunlight
Spend less time on social media. Social media is a way that many people stay in touch, spend down time, and create fun content, but it is easy to get caught up and spend hours at a time on Instagram or TikTok. Social media can also have negative effects at times and it is easy to forget that social media is only a highlight reel, and no one has a “perfect” life. This year, try spending some time away from the screen and focus on what is going on in the “real” world.
