5 Things You May Not Know About UCAN

Posted by Dawn on January 30, 2022

Hi there! It’s Cass your friendly UCAN Manager here to tell you insider secrets about our amazing NAU health coaching program. Here are 5 fun facts about UCAN:

What does UCAN stand for?

University Coaching for Activity and Nutrition. But, don’t let the title fool you. Our UCAN health coaches can help you with more than just eating and physical activity. Some other examples of changes our client make include those related to getting more sleep, stress management, and gaining more body confidence.

Our goal is to improve the health and wellness of students, faculty, and staff inside and out through helping clients find small little tweaks to their day that can make a big difference in their overall self-care.

What types of changes do UCAN clients make?

Some examples of changes clients often make as a result of meeting with a health coach include: adding a veggie to dinner, practicing meditation 3 times a week, going to be before 11pm each night, adopting a deep breathing moment to a stressful day, walking the dog more often, or stretching before bed.

Each goal is extremely individualized and the client sets the goal based on what they’re interested in trying out and come up with a plan that works for their schedule.

Who are the UCAN health coaches?

UCAN’s health coaches are undergraduate and graduate students who have completed a semester long training course and proven themselves to be incredible compassionate, non-judgmental listeners.

Our health coaches allow you (the client) to lead the session and create your own behavior change goals. Coaches are there to help you talk through your goals without judgment and help you consider your reasons for change.

Our coaches are volunteers but they sign up to serve as a health coach 3 hours a week because a) it’s incredibly rewarding and fun to be a health coach and b) the experience is an important resume-builder for those seeking careers in the health professions and psychology.

How much $$$ does a UCAN session cost?

If you’d like to try out a health coaching session to see if you like it you can do a session for FREE! If you love your session and want to do another one you can meet with us again for a follow up meeting for only $5.

Another option is our 6 session series which costs only $20 for all 6 sessions.

If you’re a student, attending a session counts as a point towards the LiveWell NAU Incentive program, which gets you in a drawing to win free stuff. And if you’re faculty or staff, UCAN sessions can count for HealthyU Wellness Incentive points.

Sessions can be held virtually or in-person (whatever your preference) and they typically last between 30 and 45 minutes. We hope to have the opportunity to serve you!
