Clubs and organizations

AIGA includes visual communication, advertising, photography and public relations majors.  AIGA promotes professional practice among graphic designers and provides a forum for discussing values and practices that positively influence the profession. Students affiliated with the organization hear guest speakers, go on studio tours, screen films, and exhibit their work.

DSR-TKA is an intercollegiate honor society devoted to the ideals of public speaking and forensics excellence. The team attends the national conference where students compete with students from other DSR-TKA member schools.

The forensic team offers students the opportunity to master skills of expression. Students may choose to participate in competitive speaking events, interpretation events, and /or debate.

Students involved with the forensic team participate in regional, national and international competitions.

NAU SCA is an association for students interested in speech communication major and minor courses. Members present papers at professional meetings, provide service related to speech activities in the School of Communication, and have regular opportunities to visit with distinguished speech scholars from other campuses.

PAD is the nation’s largest law fraternity where members develop contacts with PAD law students, legal educators, attorneys and judges. Pre-law students meet with law students at potential future schools and chapters sponsor educational lectures, panels and discussions.

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the foremost organization for students interested in public relations and communications. The group seeks to advance the public relations profession by nurturing generations of future professionals. PRSSA is made up of more than 10,000 students and advisers organized into 300 plus Chapters in the United States. The NAU chapter has been active on campus for more than 30 years.

Lambda Pi Eta is an intercollegiate honor society for speech communication undergraduate majors and minors.  To be admitted for membership a student must have completed twelve credits in speech classes and must have a 3.2 GPA. Students also participate in NAU Speech Communication Association (NAU SCA).

The National Press Photographers Association is a professional organization dedicated to both print and broadcast photojournalism. Students attend workshops and conventions; have reduced rates on equipment and access to a forum for nation- wide job listings; professional assistance in portfolio creation; entering photography competitions and finding summer internships and scholarships.

NAMA is a student organization providing merchandising majors and minors the opportunity to participate in activities related to the world of fashion: textiles and apparel manufacturing, apparel design, marketing of apparel products and the retail environment. Guest speakers, workshops, and field trips to trade shows provide insight as “real world” experiences are shared between professionals and students.

Mission: To provide a multi-disciplinary forum for environmentally-conscious NAU students to express and apply their ideas and opinions. We endeavor to enhance community environmental awareness.

SPJ members network with journalists across the country; maintain career connections; have access to a database of breaking industry news; are eligible for scholarships, fellowships and internships; have special benefits such as insurance, health plans, discounted travel and career clothes. Students become well-versed in First Amendment rights, in the ethics that govern the profession and in the relationship that exists among the public, government and the press.

The Hanzehogeschool in Groningen, the Netherlands, and the School of Communication have developed a student and faculty exchange program emphasizing the international perspective to communication. Students who participate in the program are provided an opportunity to study with students from different European universities.

UTV is the School of Communication’s student-run television station and production studio.  Based on entertainment industry models, UTV students gain practical knowledge and experience working in whatever areas interest them including programming, writing, production, marketing, and graphic design.

The Lumberjack is NAU’s award- winning student newspaper. The Lumberjack provides information, an open forum to the NAU community on a weekly basis, and professional experiences for aspiring journalists as well as students from other disciplines interested in working on a campus newspaper.

KJACK is a radio programming service originating in the School of Communication. Students can receive course credit for working at the station (1680 AM radio on campus). The program format for KJACK is generally alternative rock with specialty shows featuring differing musical styles and cultural influences and newscasts.

NAU Today is a media lab that provides news and entertainment programming written, produced and directed by student staff under supervision of a faculty adviser. Students have produced news programs, news magazine shows, drama series and comedy shows. NAU Today allows exploration and experimentation with news reporting, videography, program production and program management.
