New transfer students
Our department provides support and guidance to Indigenous students who attend Northern Arizona University in-person, online or by phone. If you would like to visit us, we are located in the Center for Native American and Indigenous Futures (bldg. 14) at the Flagstaff NAU campus. Our doors are open to you and come by to enjoy some complimentary coffee and tea Monday through Friday.
Receive guidance by professional Indigenous staff members in the following areas:
Academics:
- Review degree progression plans and course selection
- Learn about how to maintain good academic standing
- Find additional support for academic success
- Recommendations on how to engage proactively with faculty and staff
- Become familiar with the university processes
Financial aid
- Complete financial aid and tribal aid applications and documents
- Tips for scholarships searches and completing applications
- Learn about maintaining good financial aid standing
- Financial aid planning and budgeting
- Find solutions/options to financial aid issues and concerns
- Did you know that Arizona tribal members who live out-of-state may qualify for in-state tuition
- submit a copy of tribal enrollment document to NAU Admissions
Personal and cultural support
- Strategies on how to balance classes, employment, family, and culture
- For Flagstaff campus students, access the Center for Native American and Indigenous Futures Story Room for personal reflection and meditation (smudging)
- Take advantage of leadership, cultural and educational opportunities
- Plan in advance for graduate school and professional employment
- Seek free professional counseling services (compliments of NAU Counseling Services counselor)
Before you enroll
We can help you get ready for university life, and offer:
- assistance with completing the admissions, financial aid/tribal aid, and housing processes
- tips and tools on being a successful college student
- referrals to other support resources (child care, health services, housing)
Resources
Come in to the Center for Native American and Indigenous Futures (CNAIF) where we are housed to use:
- student computer terminals and a Jacks Print station (nominal fee)
- fax machine for educational documents (complimentary at OISS)
- complimentary beverage station (compliments of the CNAIF)
