The Lumberjack Writing Center
Our Mission
The Lumberjack Writing Center (LWC) offers individual writing support to students, staff, and faculty from any discipline, from any NAU location, at any stage of the writing process, of any writing skill level, and of any academic level. We strive to meet the individual needs of each student, faculty, or staff who uses our writing support services, while honoring how cultural and linguistic diversity and unique backgrounds and experiences add richness to writers’ voices. Our goal is to grow and refine our clients’ writing skills and confidence so that they can transfer what they learn during writing support sessions to future writing tasks. The scope of our support is vast, and we support clients with all genres of writing and all stages of the writing process, including interpreting assignments, generating ideas and outlining, research, grammar/punctuation/mechanics, revising, presentations, group projects, and much more.
Welcome!
Welcome to the LWC! The Lumberjack Writing Center (LWC) works with you at any stage of the writing process and we offer two formats for NAU students.
Mountain Campus students have access to our LWC locations at various locations on the Flagstaff campus for in-person appointments. We’ve also greatly extended our online hours and availability in order to accommodate online learners and social distancing.
The LWC offers weekly writing appointments with the same Writing Assistant through our ENG 100 and ENG 405 courses. In an effort to support more NAU students, students seeking writing support outside of ENG 100 are limited to scheduling 3 recurring appointments at a time and are not guaranteed to work with the same Writing Assistant week-to-week.
Need an online appointment?
The Lumberjack Writing Center and Academic Success Centers are both delighted to offer online appointments to support student writing.
The LWC provides online writing support for all students, faculty, and staff associated with NAU. Writing Assistants are outstanding undergraduate students, Graduate Teaching Assistants, and PhD students from a variety of fields and specialties, and as such are capable of assisting students from all degree paths across campus.
As the university has re-opened, so have our physical locations. We currently have in-person locations at Cline Library, the Office of Inclusion, SBS Castro 3rd Floor, and Online with extended hours. All appointments are online during the Summer and Winter semesters. To make a synchronous appointment using our online platform, please visit our WCONLINE user-instructions page, or consult our WCONLINE Basics and Creation powerpoint.
The Academic Success Centers offer online appointments for all undergraduate students, regardless of course delivery mode. Writing tutors with the Academic Success Centers are best prepared to provide support for needs such as grammar and punctuation, and organizing essays and reports; these are issues commonly experienced in, but not limited to, lower division courses. To schedule an appointment with the Academic Success Centers, please visit www.nau.edu/onlinetutoring
Need writing support over the summer or winter?
Summer and Winter online appointments are hour-long sessions, where writers work one-on-one with a Graduate Writing Assistant. We use WCONLINE as our platform for online appointments. Please be sure to create your WCONLINE account, and select the appointment block that would work best for you utilizing our WCONLINE Basics and Creation. Papers will not be accepted ahead of the appointment, but instead are uploaded into your appointment on WCONLINE.
Summer session appointments are typically available the week after the Spring semester has ended, and extend through the week before the following Fall semester begins. Winter session appointments typically begin the week after Finals and extend through the week before the following Spring semester begins.
