The CDO encourages students of all grade levels to stop in or start browsing to begin their career search. Setting yourself up to graduate with a great opportunity in your future takes many semesters of preparation, planning, and networking. Consider each semester a block in building the bridge to your future.
Four-year career development plan
First year Accordion Closed
- Discover your career objectives through self-assessment of your preferences, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Complete your Handshake profile to receive the most relevant information.
- Enroll in MGT 101 to learn more about yourself, career options, and business.
- Identify the majors and careers that interest you.
- Attend the on-campus Career Fair and Career Exploration Day to practice networking and learn about companies.
- Create a LinkedIn profile for access to thousands of NAU alumni, students, and faculty.
- Meet with an academic advisor to learn more about a specific major and the program.
- Utilize the Career Development Office (CDO) resources for your research.
- Begin thinking about your “personal brand” and online presence.
- Begin attending Pathways workshops for entrance into the Business Professional Program (6 total).
Second year Accordion Closed
- Create your marketing collateral: resume, cover letters, online presence, and brand to promote yourself. Use the CDO Pinterest and LinkedIn to assist in your research.
- Update your career interests in Handshake.
- Update your LinkedIn profile and have it reviewed by the CDO office (Room 121).
- Develop preliminary career goals with a career counselor.
- Research or join business clubs and organizations such as Delta Sigma Pi, Beta Alpha Psi, and The American Marketing Association.
- Begin to explore programs like the Executive Job Shadow, Professional Recognition Program, and the Business Leadership Program.
- Complete required Pathways workshops for entrance into the Business Professional Program (6 total).
- Continue gathering career information and build your network:
- Job shadow a friend, family member, or alumni during winter or summer break.
- Conduct informational interviews with others in your fields of interest.
- Research and apply for summer internships, jobs, or volunteer experiences.
- Monitor the Career Development Website and Facebook page for resources and job postings.
- Attend Career Exploration Day, Career Prep Week, and Company Information Sessions to gather career and company information.
- Attend Information Systems and Accounting Panels, Franke Leadership and Risk Management Week events, and the Professional Selling and Networking Mixer.
Third year Accordion Closed
- Participate in voluntary workshops, webinars, and career panels.
- Update your Handshake and LinkedIn profiles.
- Revise your résumé and cover letters and have it critiqued by the Career Development Office (room 121). For appointments visit Handshake.
- Enroll in MGT 350W to learn about business writing, professional presentations, professional dress, and more.
- Become a member of an appropriate professional association related to your major or career interest.
- Begin networking for career, internship, graduate school advice and information.
- Attend Company Information Sessions hosted by employers.
- Attend the FCB Career Exploration Day to network and familiarize yourself with future employers and companies.
- Narrow your career goals, internship targets and review with the CDO.
- Schedule a mock interview with the CDO to refine your interview skills. Use the CDO online videos as a resource.
- Begin to make an aggressive push for spring and summer internship opportunities in your field of interest.
- Apply for the Executive Job Shadow program.

- Put your targeted job search strategy to work in interviewing for full time jobs, obtaining and negotiating job offers. Much of the career management work involves practicing and improving your networking and interviewing skills.
- Update Handshake and LinkedIn profile to reflect any changes.
- Continue monitoring the CDO website and Facebook for updated job positions.
- Have your résumé and cover letter finalized and reviewed by the CDO.
- Reflect on the skills you have learned and development from classes, internships, and experiences. Record your observations in a journal or blog to use in your job search strategy.
- Develop your job search strategy and plan with a career counselor.
- Considering graduate school? Complete applications and have the Business Communication Center provide feedback on personal statements.
- Perfect your interviewing skills by scheduling mock interviews with the CDO.
- Complete the Job Placement Survey created by the CDO. (End of Spring Semester).
- Participate in Résumé Review and Mock Interview sessions sponsored by the CDO.
