What happens when classroom learning extends across the globe? For NAU student Viansa Reid, studying abroad in Spain became an opportunity to strengthen her language skills, gain hands-on research experience, and immerse herself in a new culture.
As part of NAU’s Interdisciplinary Global Programs (IGP), Reid spent an academic year at the University of Alicante, where she completed advanced Spanish coursework, studied environmental science, and worked in a bioplastics research lab investigating biodegradable plastics and microplastics in soil. The experience allowed her to apply what she learned in the classroom while contributing to meaningful environmental research.
Beyond academics, Reid embraced Spanish culture by participating in local festivals, navigating daily life in a new language, and building friendships with students from around the world. She also shared how scholarships, affordable living costs, and support from fellow students helped make the experience both accessible and rewarding.
Study abroad experiences like Reid’s demonstrate how global learning can enhance academic knowledge, build cultural understanding, and prepare students for careers in an increasingly interconnected world.
