While Universities have been traditional spaces for intellectual growth, the presence of American public colleges expanded greatly after the Civil War with recognition that self-governance requires some obligation and investment in the education of its population. Perhaps ironically, NAU first started as an insane asylum! But the Old Main building lacked resources and the 20th Territorial Legislature of Arizona decided to complete the construction of the building and dedicate it’s use to education, establishing the Northern Arizona Normal School. After many changes, NAU became an official state university in 1966. Since then, of course, NAU continues to adapt. Today, NAU’s mission remains true to its obligations to the public. Among that are a goals is career preparedness. One of the missions of the lab is to help students prepare for the practicalities of life after college, providing students with opportunities to develop career skills and their socialization into the workplace as contributors to both the civic and economic growth of Arizona.
