In this weeks blog, I am going to show you how and why you should reduce your water usage! Water usage is something that people do think of often, because we turn on the faucet and water comes out. We never wonder where that water comes from or what our water footprint is. Here are some tips on how to reduce the amount of water you use!
- Take shorter showers – By taking shorter showers, or using a low flow shower you can save gallons of water. A low flow shower uses about two gallons per minute while the conventional one takes four gallons. The average shower lasts between 5-15 mins, so taking a shorter one can save on gallons of fresh water. Lucky for you Northern Arizona University students, the dorms already have low flow showers!
- Cut back on indoor use – Many college students live in dorms or apartments, so you do not have to worry about outdoor water usage! However, you can use less water inside by turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth or washing your face. Another way to save is by fixing leaky sinks you can prevent gallons of water from being wasted.
- Eat less meat – By eating less meat or going vegetarian you can indirectly save anywhere from 1,000-2,000 gallons a day. The meat industry is very water intensive, and extremely inefficient, just one hamburger takes about 600 gallons to make! If this is too hard you can steer away from other foods like almonds, chocolate, and other nuts that are water intensive.
Reducing your water usage is easy and saves you money. Hopefully this helps you reduce your water footprint!
