Reducing Your Environmental Footprint: Geotagging and Social Media

Posted by Peer Jacks Mentor on November 8, 2018

Who uses social media to post pictures of nature and scenery? Did you know that geotagging locations on Instagram can attract more attention to them and damage them? Places like Horseshoe Bend, Angel’s Landing, and Yosemite are being geotagged so much that people come from all over the world to get a picture with them. When these places are visited by more people they get damaged and overrun by those who do not respect the rules, and the location cannot recover. If you want to learn how to protect your favorite places, stay tuned.

  1. Don’t geotag all your pictures – As much fun as it is to share places with your followers, keeping the location to yourself can help protect it. Others who know the place will hopefully do the same.
  2. Respect the rules – People will do anything to get a selfie or picture of a geotagged location, even if it is dangerous. To keep the location protected and preserved listen to the rules and do not damage the area.
  3. Public Lands – Ultimately public lands belong to all of us, and we should treat them how we want others to treat it.

Many parks say to take only pictures and leave only footprints, but maybe we should have a greater appreciation for the land than just its status on social media.
