Mentor How To: Survive an Atrocious Roommate

Posted by nickr on September 13, 2017

Mentor Aubrey S. says:

If you and your roommate aren’t getting along as harmoniously as you would have thought, here’s a few tips and tricks to make the rest of the year livable.

1. Talk to them! If you brush things that bother you under the rug, nothing will ever get solved. But if you are upfront with your roommate, you guys might have a chance to get things fixed sooner.

2. Set ground rules! If you and your roommate just aren’t clicking, setting ground rules can be a life saver: set “lights out” for a certain time; don’t eat each others food without asking; clean up after yourself, etc.

3. Find a quiet place on campus! If you have a noisy roommate, but you have a huge test to study for, finding a sanctuary that is just yours can be vital to surviving.

4. Make sure you have other friends! Sometimes you just can’t stand to be in the same room as your roommate, so you need to cool down. If you have other friends in the dorm, go to their room so you don’t kill you roommate.
