The countdown to Halloween has officially begun with only eight days left! There is something about watching a good scary movie, having the air be just a little cooler, and fall colors all around. Another aspect that makes October arguably one of the best months of the year is decorating for Halloween! As a college student, decorating may not be entirely in your budget, but there are ways to decorate to get into the Halloween spirit without breaking the bank.
How To: Decorate for Halloween on a Budget
- Two words: Dollar Store → This place is a go-to for cheap decorating. Everything for only $1? Sign me up! They have all of the basics stuff that one should have for Halloween, like a creepy (or cute) “Happy Halloween) door cover, a spooky glow-in-the-dark plastic skeleton, and even pumpkin-themed garlands. These items are super cheap and small enough to add some Halloween spice to your dorm or even simply your bedroom.
- Do It Yourself! (DIY) → Don’t have time to head to the store? No problem! Gather some paper, coloring pencils, and any other art supplies you want and get to crafting. You can never go wrong with the classic stenciled pumpkin or ghost. If you want to go beyond construction paper, this would also be the time to ditch the traditional pumpkin carving and opt to paint it instead! It is a lot less messy and allows you to get more intricate than you could imagine. Other DIY ideas include creating your own Halloween masks, a Halloween or fall-themed wreath, or even spooky desserts. For even more ideas, head to Pinterest to be inspired!
- Reuse random items → Have random items that you never use around the house? Use them for an art project! For example, I had random plastic cups that I wanted to put to use. I also had random extra napkins that I didn’t plan on using, so I decided to turn both into mini candy “jars”! I started by drawing a ghost face on the cup, then stuffed the napkins to line the cup, and poured candy into the center. Getting creative doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Look for any extra items like yarn, tape, or even fabric to create something unique!
