Welcome back to the new semester!! I hope all of you had a wonderful and restful break and are ready to get back down to the grind I definitely know that I am. This weeks dorm essentials are going to be a little bit different than what I normally recommend but I think that they are good to have for starting off the new semester on the right foot forward. My essentials this week are 1. A positive attitude and 2. A new semester goal to strive for to keep you motivated. These two essentials are definitely the things to get your semester started on the right foot and a way to look positively as the semester starts getting a bit more difficult down the road.
Number 1: A positive attitude
This essential will allow you to wake up with a smile on your face and start the day off right. I know I am definitely guilty of waking up thinking it would be a bad day and it just being completely awful. As human beings, we have the power to change our perspective and outlook so if you wake up, look in the mirror and tell yourself you are going to have a good day, chances are that that will come true. This attitude also works for classes as well. Sometimes we have friends tell us that a professor is going to be terrible or that a class is super difficult and tedious and we let the perception cloud what we actually think. If we allow ourselves to at least think that the first day will be the judge of what we think, who knows what that possible outcome might be. I definitely experienced this first hand this semester when I allowed myself to think positively about a class people have said is difficult and hard to manage but I am finding that I actually enjoy it because I allowed myself to form my own perspective. A positive attitude can lead to so many wonderful things in life and that is why I think it is important to have as you start off this new semester.
Number 2: A new semester goal
I love this part of my semester every time and I think it is important that we as humans stay goal driven. The beginning of the new semester is always my favorite because I always set what I call my “New School Year’s Resolution.” This goal or resolution for my new semester always starts my semester off with determination and motivation and it is always just the push I need to get myself started. I highly recommend doing this for yourself, this resolution can be as easy as wanting to make your bed every morning or wanting to get a 4.0. Whatever it may be, allow it to be attainable and something that will truly motivate you as your semester continues. For me, this semester my school year’s resolution is to go to the gym every morning before my classes start and I can happily say that I have been successful in my first week back and it has made all the difference in how I go about my day. I hope this essential will allow you to stay motivated throughout the semester and inspire you to do great things as you finish your first year at NAU.
