Consultations
There are a variety of ways to integrate the Lumberjack Writing Center (LWC) into your classroom and courses. You may also anonymously refer a student to us, and we’ll reach out to invite them to an appointment. Scroll down to read about our generative AI recommendations, or find details at About Us. To learn more about developing your writing pedagogy skills, read about our Faculty Certificate in Effective Writing Instruction.
Writing assignments
Set up a meeting with us to discuss assignments, projects, and presentations, so that your students can improve their writing or get the most out of their writing sessions. This may look like writing an assignment collaboratively or requiring students to make a writing center appointment as part of their assignment.
Work with us to create the following types of assignments:
- Journals, including field-notes, research, or visual media
- Professional emails to professors, employers, or public audiences
- Progress reports
- Online blogs
- Proposals
- Artist profiles
Generative Artificial Intelligence in the classroom
The LWC sees generative artificial intelligence (genAI), for example Large Learning Models such as Chat GPT, as tools to support student writers and one that can enhance accessibility when used appropriately. We acknowledge the academic integrity and copyright concerns that are commonly associated with genAI, and promote the ethical use of genAI. As such, we encourage conversation about and modeling of ethical ways to use genAI in the writing process. Read more about our principles regarding the use of genAI at About Us.
Our recommendations for faculty include:
- Offer clear and consistent guidelines regarding the use of genAI in course assignments, including citation information.
- Encourage open and honest discussion regarding the ethical use of genAI considering copyright and academic integrity issues, as well as other shortcomings of genAI, such as potential bias, lack of diverse perspectives, lack of linguistic diversity, and inaccurate information.
- Model and provide examples of the appropriate use of genAI for coursework.
- Teach students to use information literacy skills to assess the credibility and accuracy of information produced by genAI.
