Position Overview
The Fort Tuthill Military Museum (FTMM) invites applications for Fall 2024 Internships. The interns will collaborate closely with the General Manager and FTMM staff to maintain, catalog & preserve artifacts, develop and update current/future exhibits for the museum. This internship is an opportunity for students to conduct research, design, maintain, create, and complete exhibits for the museum. The museum is located at the Fort Tuthill County Park in two original buildings.
The Fort Tuthill Military Museum is one of the best museums in America, according to Trip Advisor, and ranked #1 of 98 things to do in Flagstaff by its visitors. The museum has a comprehensive repository of artifacts, photographs, correspondence, journals, maps, and documents pertaining to the history of Fort Tuthill, the Arizona National Guard, and other military artifacts.
Learning Objectives
- Research and synthesis using primary and published sources.
- Exhibit storyline development, content selection, interpretive writing, and/or graphic design layout.
- Collaborative, team-based curation, and exhibit planning.
- Public speaking experience, namely a presentation to the Board of Directors and visitors upon completion.
- Cataloging of artifacts with the Past Perfect program and proper artifact preservation and storage using standard museum practices.
Minimum Qualifications
Current undergraduate or graduate student with a program completion date of January 2025 or later.
Minimum GPA of 2.0
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work as a team or autonomously.
- Experience with Adobe web, other print design tools, or programs/applications related to graphic design, and audio or visual interpretation.
- Knowledge of or interest in history, museum studies, graphic design, marketing, audio/visual communications, or related fields.
- Interest in Arizona and/or military history.
- Have an interest in conducting research using primary source materials and archival collections, curatorial work, exhibit development, project management.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Internship Length
The internships will run from September through December 2024 and depend on the successful candidate’s availability and completion of the exhibit. The work week schedule offers flexibility, but in general and based on the intern’s availability interns will work a minimum of 3 hours and maximum of 9 hours per week, either onsite and/or remote on their assigned project. Each phase of the exhibit’s development process will require both remote and/or on-site work with the General Manager.
Education Requirements
The preferred candidate will be an initiative-taking undergraduate or graduate student. Students must be in an accredited program with an anticipated completion date of December 2024 or later.
Transportation
The museum will help with local transportation to/from the museum as needed.
