John Doherty, Head of Research and Learning, Cline Library
Chelsea James, Open Educational Resources (OER) & Course Materials Director, Pima Community College
Matthew Bloom, English Faculty, Faculty OER Specialist, Scottsdale Community College
This workshop will look at copyright and creative commons licenses to develop an understanding of open educational initiatives. We will also look at OER metafinders and review some resources designed to make finding OER easier.
A break will occur from 10:25 – 10:30 am.
10:30 – 10:55 | Concurrent Session 1 Accordion Closed
Option 1:
Using the ProQuest E-Books from the Library + OER Textbooks for classes
Elisa Geiss, Psychological Sciences
In this session, we will explore the ProQuest Ebooks available from the Cline Library and OER textbooks through OER commons or the University of Minnesota. Participants should be able to navigate through the website, search for books for their classes, and potentially identify a strong textbook for their class. This is relevant for our faculty since it utilizes free resources from our library and other libraries.
Option 2:
Using Perusall to Enhance OER and Engage Students
Kimlisa Salazar Duchicela, NAU Disability Studies
T. Adam Baldry, Pima Community Colege Academic Learning Technologies (ALT) Team
Brad Butler, Pima Community College Academic Learning Technologies (ALT) Team
Discover how to elevate your courses using Perusall, a free dynamic group annotation tool, alongside Open Educational Resources (OER). Explore Perusall’s interactive features, learn creative engagement strategies, and see how seamlessly it integrates with OER materials. Join us to explore Perusall’s potential for fostering collaborative learning environments, open pedagogy, and empowering student engagement in your classes.
A break will occur from 10:55 – 11:00 am.
11:00 – 11:25 | Concurrent Session 2 Accordion Closed
Option 1:
Using the Cathedral and the Bazaar to Unlock Better Design in OER
Alexander Greengaard, Pima Adult Basic Education for College and Career
An ongoing challenge in the development of Open Educational Resources is the under-utilization of many excellent OERs due to a lack of engaging design. In this presentation, I will highlight the impact of design on OER effectiveness, exploring how well-designed resources can foster better learning outcomes.
Option 2:
OER in Support of Inclusive Excellence
Michael J Rulon, NAU Global Languages and Cultures
Students from minoritized populations–Indigenous, Black and Latine students, LGBTQIA students, students with disabilities, and students from low-SES families–are making up a larger and larger proportion of our student bodies. However, with rising costs of higher education, these students are finding higher education less and less accessible. In addition, these populations are still underrepresented in many course materials. This session will explore the role that OER can play in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion despite increasing political opposition to DEI initiatives.
A break will occur from 11:25 – 11:30 am.
11:30 – 12:00 | Plenary Session and Closing Accordion Closed
Designing President Cruz Rivera’s EE 110 Course
Damon Burke and Rachel Hardman, NAU Online Instructional Design & Support
In this session, we will discuss the process of converting Dr. Cruz Rivera’s EE-110 course to incorporate an OER text developed by a faculty member at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). We are taking a multi-phased approach a) creating a base course that can be shared back with the original author and others who would benefit from the content; b) working with the author to develop additional supplemental materials such as knowledge checks and grading guides; and c) adding meaningful and engaging activities that align with NAU’s learning outcomes for the version taught here at NAU.
11:55 – 12:00 Closing with Amy Rushall, Assistant Vice Provost, Teaching and Learning Center
