FLAGSTAFF, Ariz—March is Social Work Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the vital role social workers play in strengthening individuals, families, and communities. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the compassion, resilience, and dedication that define the profession, as social workers continue to advocate for equity, provide critical support, and create meaningful change in diverse settings.
This year, the Social Work Committee embraced the 2026 theme of Uplift, Defend, and Transform, bringing it to life through a series of engaging and thoughtful activities. These events were designed not only to celebrate the profession, but also to inspire connection, reflection, and renewed purpose among students, faculty, and the broader community. To uplift spirits, the School of Social Work faculty and staff were invited to create their own essential oil blends, offering a moment of mindfulness and self-care amid busy schedules. These small but meaningful experiences served as reminders of the importance of wellness, both for those we serve and for ourselves.To defend the values and impact of social work, the committee hosted educational and engaging opportunities such as A Day in the Life of a Social Worker, 101 Things to Do with a Social Work Degree, and a series of interviews highlighting real-world experiences from practicing professionals. These resources encouraged students and colleagues to explore the depth of the field, while reinforcing the importance of advocacy and informed practice. Finally, to transform the environment and inspire hope, the committee reimagined the hallway outside the School of Social Work office in SBS West into a vibrant and welcoming display. Through visuals, messages of encouragement, and creative expression, the space became a reflection of the profession’s commitment to empowerment and positive change.
Another event during Social Work Month that highlighted one of our local practitioners, Amber Martin MSW, was the annual Trujillo Practitioner in Residence Program, bringing together students, faculty, alumni, and professionals from a range of disciplines for networking, mentorship, and career exploration.
Held in late March, the program fostered engagement across departments including Politics and International Affairs, Applied Indigenous Studies, Geography, Parks and Recreation, the Honors College, and Social Work. The initiative connected students with experienced practitioners and alumni, offering insight into career pathways and professional development. The series began on March 25 with a networking reception held from 5 to 6 p.m. at Cline Library. Faculty, staff, and visiting practitioners gathered for an evening of conversation and connection, with food provided. On March 26, students engaged more informally during a pizza lunch from 12 to 1 p.m. The drop-in event allowed attendees to meet practitioners, ask questions about career opportunities, and connect with peers. Students were encouraged to bring friends. The program concluded on March 27 with a lunch and panel discussion held from 12 to 1:30 p.m. This culminating event brought together students, faculty, community members, and practitioners for a broader conversation on professional experiences and industry insights. Attendees were encouraged to invite colleagues and friends, and food was provided.Organizers said the Trujillo Practitioner in Residence Program continues to serve as a valuable platform for building connections between the university community and professionals in the field, helping bridge the gap between academic study and real-world practice.
Together, these efforts honored not only the work that social workers do every day, but also the heart behind it. Social Work Month serves as a powerful reminder that through uplifting others, defending justice, and transforming systems, social workers continue to make a lasting difference in the world.
