A partnership between Northern Arizona University and Follett, NAU’s campus store partner, will make course materials available at a single price for NAU students this fall.
The program, known as NAU Axe/ess, ensures that all participating students receive their required course materials at the start of the term for a predictable price, regardless of their major or the retail price of individual materials. With Axe/ess, all required course materials are available to all students immediately at the beginning of each course, which will ensure that students are better positioned for success right from the start. Additionally, all materials are included in the $270 per semester price, so students can budget with confidence with no surprise costs.
A 2025 report from The College Board showed that U.S. students in four-year public universities spent an average of $1,330 annually on textbooks and supplies. NAU Axe/ess, in keeping with its mission of accessibility, would save students about 50% of those costs. In addition, the launch of this program is accompanied by greater investments in Open Educational Resources development, as an additional long-term investment in affordability.
“NAU Axe/ess is an important step in supporting our students’ success and academic momentum, as well as making a college degree more affordable and accessible for students,” said John Georgas, senior vice provost for academic operations.
Students are automatically enrolled in Axe/ess but can opt out if the program does not make financial sense for any given semester. This program is open to all undergraduate students enrolled at the Flagstaff campus or NAU Online. Digital course materials will be available on the first day of class in Canvas for $270 per semester. Included physical materials will also be available for pickup at the campus store.
