NAU Axe/ess  is a new course materials provisioning program for all students enrolled at NAU’s Flagstaff or Online campuses in undergraduate coursework.

NAU Axe/ess prioritizes digital content and charges the student account a flat rate of $270 for the Fall or Spring semester and $95 for the summer term for all required course materials.

By the first day of class, participating students can easily access provided course materials by logging onto their NAU Canvas account.

Program Benefits

Academic Success

Access to required digital and physical course materials on the first day of class through NAU Canvas improves student success and increases the likelihood of course completion.

Students are better prepared to learn  and instruction can start right away.

Financial Stability

Fixed price per semester, regardless of the retail cost of materials.

Financial Aid may be applied directly to the student account to remove the need for separate payments.

Opt-out model allows students flexibility if the program does not make financial sense for any given semester.

Time Savings

Removes the need for students to secure course materials from different sources while worrying about finding the correct editions/versions.

Prioritizes digital materials and consolidates access via NAU Canvas for ease of use and convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NAU Axe/ess? Accordion Closed

NAU Axe/ess is the university’s course materials program designed to ensure students are prepared for the first day of class with access to their required course materials.

How does NAU Axe/ess work? Accordion Closed

Once a student registers for courses, required course materials are identified based on faculty adoptions.

Digital materials are delivered directly in Canvas, where students can access their online materials and utilize tools such as highlighting, note-taking, and search features.

Physical materials are prepared by the campus store for in-store pick up and/or shipping directly to the student, depending on selected options.

Physical materials can be kept at the end of the term .

Follett, NAU’s campus store partner, works to coordinate sourcing and delivery of required materials so students receive the correct adopted materials in the correct format by the first day of class.

Program Structure  Accordion Closed

All NAU undergraduate students enrolled at the Flagstaff Campus or through NAU Online are automatically enrolled in NAU Axe/ess by default.

Students who do not wish to participate may opt out by the published deadline (generally the Last Day to Drop Courses without a “W”) each term with no penalty. Students who opt out are responsible for securing their required materials independently from the NAU Bookstore or another source.

Students may opt-out through their NAU Canvas account and may also opt back in to the program prior to the deadline.

Students must take action to opt out each term prior tot he deadline to have the charge removed from their account.

What if a student changes their mind about participating? Accordion Closed

Students have until the Add/Drop w/o a ‘W’ deadline to opt in or out of the NAU Axe/ess program.

After that date, the charge cannot be removed from the student account.

What are the benefits for students? Accordion Closed

NAU Axe/ess is built around five core student priorities:

Choice | You decide what works for you.

  • Students are automatically enrolled for convenience and may choose to stay in the program or opt out each term; no pressure, no penalty.

Prepared | Start the term with everything you need.

  • Required course materials are available by the first day of class so students can focus on learning rather than searching or shopping for materials.

Consistent | A clear, reliable process each term.

  • All participating students receive their required course materials for the same program price, regardless of major or retail price for individual materials.

Predictable | Clear program pricing. No surprise costs.

  • All required course materials are included in one consistent program price so students can budget with confidence.

Convenient | Access built into your day.

Each term follows a streamlined process:

  • Digital materials are delivered directly through NAU Canvas
  • Physical materials are prepared by the campus store and made available for pick-up

Will students save money? Accordion Closed

Students may experience cost benefits through NAU Axe/ess as a result of the campus store’s publisher relationships and coordinated sourcing approach.

More importantly, the program provides transparent and predictable pricing each term. All required course materials are included in a clearly communicated program charge, helping students plan ahead and budget with confidence.

By simplifying the process and consolidating required materials into one coordinated experience, the program also reduces the need to search across multiple platforms and ensures students can easily access and manage their materials regardless of format.

What type of materials are included? Accordion Closed
