Common Concerns

Writing Assistants are prepared to help you improve your writing skills. Some common appointment concerns are listed below:

  • Citation styles
  • Thesis statements & topic sentences
  • Organization
  • Outlining and research
  • Interpreting assignments
  • Grammar and usage
  • Cover letter and resume review
  • Thesis, Article, and Dissertation support
  • Language support services (see below)
  • Other areas as needed or requested

Please note that the Lumberjack Writing Center does not provide copyediting services. However, we can support you with improving your formatting and grammatical skills.

Language Support Services

While all of our Writing Assistants can support students with developing their English language skills, Camille and Shannon have completed specific training with the NAU Global Communications Center to help students develop their English pronunciation and oral communication skills.

During a Language Support Services appointment, you can expect to:

  • Watch 1-2 instructional videos (~5 minutes each)
  • Discuss concepts from the video with your tutor
  • Complete targeted communicative practice with the tutor

First-time students will complete a diagnostic test by reading aloud two scripts to help your tutor understand how to best support you.

If you miss a scheduled appointment without informing your tutor, you will not be allowed to schedule another one within the month. If you miss two scheduled appointments, you will not be able to schedule another one during the semester.

To schedule a Language Support Services appointment, log into WCOnline using your NAU ID, navigate to the Fall 2025 General Schedule, and find the next available appointment with Camille, Shannon, or Raihan.

Drop-In Hours

If you have a simple question, want to work on your writing with help nearby, or don’t have time to schedule an hourlong appointment, consider Drop-In Hours!
