Although there may be some online course offerings for some of the courses, the core courses are offered in person only.

No, as befitting an Interdisciplinary Health degree, we accept students from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.

Applicants are evaluated based on their GPA; GRE; potential to become a successful independent researcher (as demonstrated by the research statement and letters of recommendation); general fit for the program based on career goals and interests; and fit with NAU faculty for appropriate mentoring.

Up to 18 credits may be transferred from another graduate degree. However, petitions for transfer credits must go through several levels of approval and stipulations apply. The university policy on time to complete the PhD has additional information.

Funding is often available in the forms of graduate assistantships and tuition waivers. The graduate assistantships may be with specific faculty or “at large” positions that can be found at the bottom of the Graduate Assistantships page.

A PhD typically takes between 4- 8 years of full-time study, but there is considerable variability.
